Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 I don't know what's crazier: that contract, or that the Marlins' payroll would still be under $80M.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 I don't know what's crazier: that contract, or that the Marlins' payroll would still be under $80M. That's still probably too high for them.
Governator Community Moderator Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 How far is this going to go until MLB considers caps? I mean this could destroy a small franchise years down the road.

The Royals just made the World Series... baseball has the most parity in its history. Caps aren't coming nor should they be.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 The Royals just made the World Series... baseball has the most parity in its history. Caps aren't coming nor should they be. Meh. Now that Royals made the world series excuse will be used for 5 years
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Braves traded recently fired GM Frank Wren's son (Kyle Wren) for a s***** minor league pitcher (Zach Quintana). On the surface it seems petty but when you consider that neither player is worth a damn, it's probably best for the Braves to cut ties with a player who might harbour bitterness towards the org.

Look any player is tradeable as long as the Blue Jays are in the league. Ie. if he's 35 and not producing or in a heavy decline, if AA is still here, then we most likely will trade 1-2 A prospects for him + take on 90% salary for whoever it is.
Governator Community Moderator Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 The Royals just made the World Series... baseball has the most parity in its history. Caps aren't coming nor should they be. Caps should be there to protect idiot GMs from over spending long term and setting up a franchise for guaranteed debt & risk of collapse. Marlins don't have one of those luxurious TV deals, they don't generate a lot of profits, have the most dishonest owner in baseball, one of the worst attendance in baseball and already one of the least valuable teams in the NL. Just seems hard to comprehend that for the next 13 years that franchise would be on the hook for $28MM annually to one player. Does that not worry MLB a little bit? By cap I'm referring to length of contracts, not amount of $.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 The ten free agents for which contract predictions were requested: Lester - Cubs at 6/132 Scherzer - Yankees at 7/168 Hanley - Yankees at 5/95 Martin - Cubs at 4/60 Shields - Red Sox at 5/95 Sandoval - Giants at 5/85 V-Mart - Tigers at 3/48 Melky - Blue Jays at 4/60 Cruz - Orioles at 3/48 Rasmus at 2/18
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Burnett for 8.5 is a really solid deal. Despite some bloated ERA numbers over the past 6 years or so, dude's been a reliable workhorse.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Stanton should have been a thread Just sayin'
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 That Melky contract is really gross. It's interesting how Melky and Martin were both projected for 4/60... it validates the poll kgm1 recently created, where pretty much everyone preferred Martin even at a higher price. I think the crowd was low on Hanley too. Some team is going to PAY him. And they should IMO, guy is an absurdly good hitter.
King Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Spreadsheet soon North? I'd like to see who thinks Melky will get more than 60m. Hope it wasn't me. I don't remember my picks.
King Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Yeah, 3 years at a 40 million AAV seems a little high
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Maybe you should fix Spanky's pick for Melky for him... Thanks, I changed it to 13.33. And thanks for giving King the link. This time of year is so much fun!

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Love the Pirates signing of AJ Burnett. $8.5 M is a bargain.
King Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Adalberto Mejia suspended 50 games for positive drug test (Sibutramine)
King Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/minor-league-drug-suspensions-2014/ And looks like former Jays first round pick Tyler Gonzales has more problems than just throwing the ball across the plate, as he was suspended for drug of abuse on Sept. 11th. (2nd positive test)

Guys like this almost never earn the big contracts they get. He's breaking down.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Some pretty juicy stuff in this story about Boras trying to cover up Manny's drug test in 09. Anthony Bosch said Boras told him that the MLBPA needed him to produce a patient chart for Ramirez. Bosch responded that he didn't keep records on his patients, so he fabricated a file for the union's use. Boras, who is a California-based attorney with a doctorate in industrial pharmacology, told Bosch to include hCG, which is commonly used for weight loss, on Ramirez's fabricated patient chart, Bosch said. Boras apparently believed it wasn't banned by baseball, according to Bosch's account. Boras also came up with a story, Bosch told the federal agents, about Ramirez's elderly uncle using testosterone cream that resembled aftershave. Bosch added that since Ramirez had a weakness for women, as Boras' story went, one night he unwittingly used his uncle's cream as aftershave, resulting in a failed drug test due to high testosterone levels. http://www.thescore.com/mlb/news/630575

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 interesting to see how he does without Martin as his catcher, assuming Martin doesn't resign Meh, Burnett was still pretty darn good with the Pirates in 2012. Remember he had Martin as a catcher with the Yankees in 2011 and he was pretty bad. I think he'll be fine with the Pirates again - he looked really comfortable there.
shortstop Verified Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 that was the old Martin but seriously, good point
