John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Someone post a gif already. The video of it isn't great, the play wasn't even at first, but I'm sure something will be up soon

Edit: Oh nvm, looks like he hurt his knee, I was looking at his ankle.

That's just it, it really doesn't look bad, but he was howling like he was shot. Something in that knee or ankle went horribly wrong.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Garrett Richards is out for the season more tahn likely taken off on a stretcher knee injury rip angels
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Jesus ... Big Papi just went BOOM
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Garret Richards's injury could be bad for the Angels in any hope of them winning the AL West or making a deep run in the playoffs. Without him, they're down to Jered Weaver, a struggling CJ Wilson, and one questionable rookie in Shoemaker and a bullpen guy in Santiago. And their AAA options are terrible, just like the AAA team (56-75, 2nd worst in the PCL). Nevertheless, the A's just may have gained a good chance to win the AL West. Options are basically non-existent on the 40-man, as Alvarez(Jose) is on the DL, Michael Roth is not MLB ready for starting, as he has not had any AAA experience and didn't pitch well in relief in LA either. Drew Rucinski, who pitches in AA, is the most likely candidate for a callup, as he's probably their only good option in the system. (3.07 ERA, 128/39 K/BB ratio in AA)
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Man that's f***ing horrible, he was in a lot of pain.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Man that's f***ing horrible, he was in a lot of pain. Watching the game you could hear his screaming on the audio until they turned down the volume on the mics close to first

BTS Community Moderator Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 At least you guys didn't need him for a playoff push, amirite?
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 It's sad cause he's talking to all of us.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Richards' injury really is bad for the Angels.. they have NO depth in AAA. Their best options at AAA Salt Lake are left-hander Wade LeBlanc, who is 10-3 with a 4.00 ERA in 21 starts, left-hander Randy Wolf, who is 5-2 with a 4.68 ERA in 11 starts or right-hander Chris Volstad, who is 2-1 with a 5.45 ERA Might as well hand the A's the division.. and possibly hand the Tigers and Mariners wild card spots. With so little depth in the Angels system, it'll be a struggle for them to manage, especially with a ton of games vs. the Mariners and A's.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Man, i would love for the Jays to trade Mark Buehrle to the Angels for something decent. Would never happen because of the PR backlash. We could call up Norris to take his place and probably wouldn't miss a beat and to get rid of that contract would really help in the off season.

I still kind of feel like Buehrle would be missed next year. Eliminating 2.5-3 wins from maybe the most reliable pitcher in baseball would hurt. And $19 million isn't really that expensive for what he provides. Maybe a couple million more than you'd like to pay, but it would be difficult to replace his production.

Sure, except that the Angels would be better off not trading for Buerhle and just using Wolf or Leblanc. Would you just let Buerhle go for nothing or want some s***** asset from the Angels' system back?

Maybe a couple million more than you'd like to pay, but it would be difficult to replace his production. More like 1.5-2 wins in all honesty, and a reasonable GM could probably find that at less than $19m. Again, he's a great fit for the Dodgers or Angels like Reyes, and he provides some very valuable contributions, but we simply don't have the payroll room to pay $19m for that.

Maybe a couple million more than you'd like to pay, but it would be difficult to replace his production. Sure. But he needs to stop being looked at as a 2/3 and be seen as what he is, a 4. There no real room for improvement in his game. Chances are next year he'll be slightly more hittable, only be around 5 K/9, 2 bb/9, that's not really a guy I want to pay 19 million to as a back end starter. Reliable... Yes. Too expensive for his skillset? Absolutely. He's had an xFIP under 4 only 3 seasons in his career, and never under 3.77. 2 of the seasons were 9 and 10 years ago.

I'll be pretty surprised if Buehrle isn't over 2 wins next year, especially when you consider that his past totals were FIP-based, which undervalues Buehrle's contributions. But anyway, that's beside the point. Knowing that he might be overpaid by 2-3 million and anctually being able to replace that production are two very different things. Are you confident that AA can reinvest that $19 million, and get more wins than Buehrle will provide without giving up assets or giving up more term than would be ideal? I'm not. Unless you have a deal worked out with Shields or Lester or something, trading Buehrle opens up a hole.

Zero chance that happens. Besides, the Angels can't take on any more salary with $123M already booked for 10 players next season, an onus not to get to the luxury tax(they're at $165M with benefits) and a non-existent farm system. And they have to pay Garret Richards a huge arb raise regardless of injury. All those arb raises will wipe out the savings from Vernon Wells and Joe Blanton's contracts coming off the books.

Buehrle don't roll like that.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 First word on Richards, left knee patella injury. Severity still not known

His skillset really isn't represented well by xFIP, but he puts so many balls in play that he really needs a good defense behind him, which the jays don't have. And to one of your other points, yeah I think the could be a 2-2.5 WAR pitcher out there that wouldn't cost 19 million. As for whether I trust AA to find him... No, not really
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 First word on Richards, left knee patella injury. Severity still not known What's the time frame for an injury like this?

No, not really Brandon McCarthy says hi.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Omg... The Red Sox are brutal... Just brutal. Nava just let a pop fly drop in front of him with the bases loaded and none out. Got the runner at second... But holy crap that was awful.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 What's the time frame for an injury like this? Depends on what's actually wrong with the patella. I had a displaced patella when I was 19 and it was no joke. Took 2-3 months of physical therapy before I could even walk without pain. Not enough detail on what kind of patella injury he has though.

You have a guy you can project at like 2.5 wins with very small error bars, so you're paying like $7.5 million per win on a 1-year contract. Sure, it would be nice to try and beat that, but that's about where the market is, and you would be asking AA to beat the market to find better value than Buehrle. Consider further that the rotation features a lot of high-risk arms, and I really think Buehrle makes sense here.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Brandon McCarthy says hi. Key point though, AA has to find him and be willing to pay more than league minimum.
