The Monday night baseball guys hating on shifting, I've noticed a lot of commentators hate the shift. Someone gets a base hit. "It would have been an out if they didn't have that gotdang shift on."

Billy Ripken is taking on the cause like he's the spokesman for Tsunami relief effort. Dude is annoying

I think it's used a bit too much, like okay... for guys like Ortiz et al, sure, but not everyone left handed and over 200lbs needs to be shifted against.

What I don't understand, is that we constantly see teams shift a batter to pull the ball, but then pitch to him outside, forcing him to hit the ball THE OTHER WAY. I see i all the time and it really doesn't make sense to me.

Not sure it's a good idea to tell the batter where the ball is going to be all the time, if they shift him to pull and they will only pound in, won't he just look for balls inside and ignore the outside part?

Has there been talk with the MLB about removing the shift? Hell, they added a second wild card team and instant replay which I never thought would happen. Maybe the "purists" will let this by as well.

What? How? Why? They'd have to paint X's on the field and tell fielders they have to wait there until the pitch is thrown.

What does "remove the shift" even mean?

In baseball, you have nine fielders who line up wherever they want on the field. One of them has to pitch to the hitter. All of the designated positions are artificial constructs designed to improve fielding efficiency, just as the shift is. There's nothing sacred about the positions. They used to shift Ted Williams... and baseball teams didn't even use a shortstop for the first years of the game's modern history.

The shift is an innovation that even purists can get excited about.

De acuerdo a una fuente, los Cardenales de San Luis subirán a Óscar Taveras a Grandes Ligas en el día de hoy.

Cards could call up Oscar Taveras today.

Only the pitcher and catcher have defined spots on the diamond. As a precursor to the shift, Baltimore used to move an outfielder to the infield. The only requirement of position players is that they have to be on fair grounds (except the catcher).

I thought Puig would fall from last years's 160 wRC+ to 120-130 or so. If would seem that I was wrong.

He's f***ing good but not Trout level.

Good Yankee-RedSox fan joke from reddit:

A yankees fan and two red sox fans walk down a street..

They see a dead, nude, woman in a ditch. The Red Sox fans both take the hats off of their heads and cover the woman's breasts. The Yankees fan does the same over her privates and they call the police. The cop shows up, walks over and lifts the hat over her left breast with his pen and writes in his notebook. He then lifts the hat over her right breast and writes in his notebook. He then walks down and lifts the hat over her privates and writes in his book, gets a confused look on his face, then uses his pen again to lift it up and look, then writes in his book again. One of the Red Sox fans starting to think the cop might be perveted says, "Everything okay under there?" The cop looks back and says, "Yeah I just got confused. Normally when I look under a Yankees hat I see a prick."

@magelb

It's a flexor pronator strain for Cliff Lee. Phillies doctors were alarmed enough to send him for MRI. Pitched for three weeks with it.

I've heard the variant which was "Every time I've looked under a Red Sox hat I've seen an *******". But really, it's all accurate.

Odorizzi strikes out the side in the 4th but throws 40 pitches in the inning. 17 were foul balls.
