You had it coming to you. JJ gets hurt, it's who he is.

I realize, I was just hoping for a little bit more time to get a pitcher lol. Which I've been working on. This just forces me to speed up my timetable a bit which is unfortunate.

Now we know why AA wouldn't give JJ a qualifying offer. He just can't be trusted to stay healthy. It's shocking that our young guys such as Stroman and Sanchez, Redmond, Rogers and even McGowan will actually make our team better by replacing Johnson on the roster. Any of our pitchers can do better than the 2-8 we got from JJ.

Wow,,, W/L record being quoted against a pitcher... I guess that about sums about the level of argument we can expect.

I mean, of course AA should be lauded for not keeping a pitcher with a poor health track record. Can't wait for him to get rid of Morrow, Happ, Janssen, Santos, McGowan, Sanchez, Delabar, Drabek, Hutchison, Rogers and Dickey.

f*** it, Buerle, Stroman, Romero, Redmond, Cecil, Loup and Jeffress can handle things.

somewhat interesting news from Houston on top prospect George Springer:

A person with knowledge of the situation told the Houston Chronicle's Evan Drellich that the player's union and George Springer's agent are considering filing a grievance against the Astros.

The basis of such a grievance is the idea that the Astros are only considering keeping Springer in the minor leagues to start the season to delay his service time clock from starting, which in turn affects his free agency down the line. It's not likely to have an impact -- if it's even filed -- as the Astros can point to Springer's shortcomings, such as the fact that he struck out 161 times last season in the minors, as their reasoning for keeping him down for a few more months of seasoning. Even though nothing will likely come of it, it's still a bad look for the club.

He's out for April and maybe more.

But he's a bargain at $14M per season right ? JFaS says he's 0% "injury prone" so his forecasts remain good. My model says he's had several recent injuries and hasn't pitched well since 2010. Now if the Jays had given him the QO, you'd all being talking about the Jays bad luck and how our pitching staff always gets hurt. Instead, we have some hope that 1 or 2 in the Hutch/Morrow/Rogers/Redmond group will turn into a decent pitcher and we still have the $14M.

Sometimes you make your own luck by properly analyzing the risks you have. I believe the Jay's insistence they need a starter is less about the #4s and #5s, but all about they know Morrow might never be healthy again. And this is why they didn't sign Johnson.

At least we have Stroman and Sanchez on the way by May or June, if Morrow doesn't cut it. We just couldn't risk handing $14M to an oft-injured pitcher who hasn't been healthy since 2010.

Could be worse, as San Diego was REALLY hoping for Josh Johnson to be healthy, especially considering they hope to contend this year, before Headley leaves via free agency.

No surprise on JJ, wish him the best. I was for qualifying him, but the Jays dodged a bullet there, better lucky than good I guess. They should've used the money to address 2b and the bench, but it is what it is.

It is possible that the Jays will use the money midseason to upgrade their team if enough of the projects on the team work out. We could become buyers if most of Cabrera, Lawrie, Rogers, Hutch, and Sierra are decent. And I say Sierra because no matter how much people dislike him on here, he may contribute with his bat and very little is expected of him. So the best sequence is Dickey/Bautista/EE/Reyes are great, some of the listed upside guys come through, and we have only one or two glaring holes on the team still ( either a SP/2B/4th OF or an injury creates a spot ) and we trade to fill for an expensive guy or two someone wants to salary dump.

The Jays still traded assets for a year of him so they must've liked something about him. I guess his injury history prior to the date of the trade were not relevant to the Jays.

Let's face it, it's not like they spent the $14M elsewhere on the ball club.

Maybe, let's hope it all works out, I'm looking forward to the season.

Every team does this. Stroman, Synder, Taveras, Baez, and Springer are all going to be up in June.

not every team says "we'll start you in the majors this season if you sign the 7 year contract we offered" I'm completely on the teams side here as I'm all for their negotiating technique, and I don't like Springer's agent.

All I know is many teams do this which is fine and as per the rules but if they somehow came out and said it then it could be a problem.

Juan Francisco, the former 3B for the Braves and Brewers has been DFA'd:

Further clarity could come at first base later today, as it appears Juan Francisco's locker has been packed up in the Maryvale clubhouse.

Brewers 1B has got to be one of the worst positions in the majors. Right up there with Blue Jays 2B.

They used to have this guy, heavyset, left handed bat. He was decent.

Yeah, that was a really stupid move. They must've been thinking about an Evan Longoria's scenario and how much more money he could make. Should've gone for the guaranteed dough, cause IMO Springer and his 27% K rate last year is pretty damn risky.

I expect it. Either that or them signing Stephen Drew instead of giving guys like Dean Anna or Yangervis Solarte a shot to fill in while Brendan Ryan is on the DL. With Jeter struggling badly this spring, I expect the Yanks to start looking at Drew again..

1B is a more offensive position than 2B.. the Brewers have had none of that at 1B since Fielder went to Detroit.

Overbay and Reynolds have won the 1B job there, BTW.

Tigers, Scherzer Done Talking Extension For Season

By Zach Links [March 23 at 1:07pm CST]

1:07 pm: Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports also spoke with Boras and the agent indicated both sides were active in talks and there was a price point at which Scherzer would have said yes, but he declined to disclose the details of his proposal to the Tigers (Twitter links).

12:25 pm: Scott Boras tells ESPN.com it wasn't Scherzer who rejected the extension offer, but the Tigers. "Max Scherzer made a substantial long-term contract extension offer to the Detroit Tigers that would have placed him among the highest-paid pitchers in baseball, and the offer was rejected by Detroit,'' Boras said. "Max is very happy with the city of Detroit, the fans and his teammates, and we will continue negotiating with the Tigers at season's end."

10:58am: An industry source told ESPN.com's Jayson Stark that the Tigers' offer to Scherzer was for a slightly lower figure than the $25.7MM per year that Justin Verlander received in the extension he signed last spring. However, the deal still would have placed Scherzer among the top six highest-paid pitchers in baseball in terms of average annual value.

Isn't the plan to extend Scherzer half the reason they traded away Fister and Fielder?

But they won't give him "almost Verlander" money?
