The the diminished K rate was far more concerning than his BB rate.

The diminished K rate this year is an issue. The consistent issue walking batters is an issue. He's not "trending down" - his BB/rate was up in 2012 compared to 2011, and down in 2013 as compared to 2012. One year of decrease following an increase does not a "trend" make. And, regardless, his BB rate (4.17 BB/9 in the minors in 2013 - slightly higher in the AFL) is alarmingly high, especially when contemplating whether he'll be a quality contributor any time soon. And especially since he's an upright arm thrower.

 

 

“It’s not like my command is bad, they’re competitive walks,” Sanchez says. “Don’t get me wrong, there are some four-pitch walks, but being able to throw my curveball for a strike and put out people with my curveball is probably the biggest thing I wanted to work on this year, because I feel like my changeup and my fastball are pretty much there every night.”

“I was trying to make it too nasty, and taking a step back, and letting it do the work out front is what’s helped me,” he continues. “It was always a good curveball, I just could never throw it for a strike, so nobody would respect it. They were sitting fastball. Now that I can throw that, it’s getting me through five, six, seven innings.”

I meant his most recent sample was from his age 20 season.

 

Cherry picking small samples there. Even if you were to use his AFL stats the bump in K's was positive. His walks also aren't alarmingly high.

Why can't we judge his delivery? We already know that it a) increases the likelihood of a shoulder injury (something he had this season and something Taijuan Walker, who made similar changes to his delivery, also had this spring), and negatively impacts his release distance, which makes his stuff play down across the board. He could succeed in spite of those things, but it's still a negative change and not helping him.

 

The only hope for me is that the Jays were just working on him getting a specific part of his delivery down and will go back to an extended stride this season. If this is what they want to go with long-term, I'm still not even close to writing him off, but I'm worried.

No wonder Time Warner Cable is trying to merge with Comcast.. cable cos. need to stop giving these big TV contracts to teams for RSNs. Good thing the Dodgers are insured if this network ends up the same fate as Comcast Sportsnet Houston, which filed for Chapter 11 protection.
