6/100 is a great deal. I would love Masterson on a deal like that.

Are the Indians any more likely to pony up for him than they were for Ubaldo Jimenez, or is he likely to hit free agency too??

I don't know, but Masterson is a superior pitcher to Jiminez IMO.

I'd take Lester, Masterson, Bailey, or Shields on that deal. These are stud arms.

Agreed. Masterson would be my first choice, considering Bailey won't be an option. But Lester and Shields would be great as well, but both are older than Masterson, so I would prefer the younger arm.

Based on age I'd certainly be more comfortable giving Masterson a 5 year deal than Shields, but I'd easily take Shields on a shorter deal.

I feel like somebody will give Shields 5 years and close to $100 million. If his 2014 is about on par with his previous work I'd go 5/90 for him. Front-load the deal bit, and you're paying for about 2 WAR per year for 5 years. If he goes something like 3, 2.5, 2, 1.5, 1 you have your money's worth, and I think he has a decent chance to beat that.

Yeah, I'd want it a bit front loaded considering he'll be 33 when he signs it. Still, his velocity has actually increased a little the last few years, and we know he can be successful in our division.

On a short term deal absolutely, but if we're talking 5-6 years then Masterson is my choice,

If we are giving out a 5 year deal, I'd rather it be Masterson. Even 5 years and an option or two.

I expect Peavy to hit the market, but I think the Red Sox end up extending Lester.

I don't really have anything to back this up, but he just seems like a guy who's going to age well. He's never hurt, has maybe the best changeup in the game, and as you say the velo hasn't dropped at all. In most cases I'd hate the idea of buying a guy's 33-37 seasons, but it's hard to imagine Shields turning into a complete lemon in the near future. Having a reliable guy like that at the top of a rotation is huge IMO.

More likely than not he ends up being a liability the final couple years of the deal. It's nice to think he won't and maybe he won't, but that is how you get burned.

Posted
Same. I'd probably rank them Masterson > Shields > Lester in order of preference for a 5-year deal, but I'd take all of them for something in the vicinity of 5/90.

Yeah any would be a huge boost, but as I said in a previous post, I just feel like the Red Sox will extend Lester at some point and let Shields walk unless their rotation is in shambles and they are desperate.

Just to mess with all of you:

Shields/Masterson

Syndergaard

Stroman

Sanchez

Alvarez/Hutchison/Nicolino

How fun would that be?

Considering the low salaries in that rotation, why not be greedy and have both Shields and Masterson in it? Shields, Masterson, Syndergaard, Stroman, Sanchez would be an unbelievably filthy rotation, with Alvarez traded to Seattle for Franklin :)

And we're leaving out Morrow, who has a reasonable $10 million option for 2015. That would be so fun to watch.

Shields, Masterson, Morrow, Syndergaard, Stroman with Sanchez ready to step in next year, and take over for Morrow the following year. It sure would be fun.

Plus D'Arnaud, Lawrie, Rasmus/Gose/Marisnick, Escobar, Hech (I know he can't hit, but still). Don't forget that there's a decent chance they would've ended up with a top-5 pick in the upcoming draft plus the 11 pick. I also think Bautista would've requested a trade in mid-2013 if they had decided to take a step back, that could've fetched a couple more young players.

Ok, I'll stop dreaming now....

I love how everyone assumes all these guys will pan out. Right now Syndergaard looks like the best bet, but Stroman and Sanchez have huge question marks around them.

If he even pitches 120 solid innings this year that option is almost a guarantee to be picked up.

I don't consider Syndargaard or Stroman to have huge question marks. Sanchez a little more so.

I am a big fan of Stroman, but there are question marks around him. I know this has been beat to death but his height is an issue. One that I hope he proves everyone wrong, but it's still a concern. Most of these pitching prospects never pan out and any added question marks just make it such a huge mountain to overcome. Some do but most don't.

Player options on Morrow, Happ, McGowan, Lind, Santos, and Thole for 2015. Some fun threads coming to this forum in the near-future lol.

Should be interesting to follow. I do expect McGowan's arm to literally fall onto the field at some point this season. Just seems like it's well overdue.

I don't see it as a concern, because he has the stuff (and the build also, it's not like he's a scrawny twig).

It is a concern when most of these guys fail. Don't get me wrong, I actually really like him, I am just tempering my expectations.

Keep in mind that at least one of Syndergaard, Stroman, Sanchez is still likely to completely bust. Which one?

Posted
The obvious ranking in "Most likely to bust" is:

1. Sanchez

2. Sanchez

3. Sanchez

4. Stroman

5. Syndergaard

LOL yeah I agree. Stroman and Syndergaard look quite projectable as MLB starters. Stroman may have the lowest ceiling of the 3 but he sure looks like he's ready for the majors, the most "complete" among them. Sanchez still seems to have both ace and bust potential.

Sanchez is a big wild card, but more likely than not will bust. Unless he gets those walks down this season, I have a hard time believing he will be anything relevant in the bigs.

This season will be a huge one for Sanchez. If he struggles with the control yet again, it may be time to ease up on the expectations going forward. I expect that he'd drop significantly on prospect lists as well.
