Yeah. He was known as a great defender all through the minors, then came up and made a lot of highlight reel plays and cemented his reputation. Anyone who hasn't had the misfortune of looking at his fangraphs page would think his a great defender. That reputation has earned him over 8000 egregious and completely undeserved major league plate appearances.

It's crazy what one season can do for baseball player's reputation. Joe Carter had that one truly great season in Cleveland and he was basically annointed cleanup hitter for life from that point onwards.

Brett Lawrie anyone? Guy produced like a monster in his first 43 games in 2011, been just below average hitter in 2012 and 2013 since.

I feel like that stint he had when he first came up makes him overrated as a hitter by the fanbase quite a bit

I was going to argue with you but then I saw what little defensive value he provided last year. Only 0.1 Runs on defense over 888.2 innings? Is that a typo? Why isn't this talked about? That's a terrible defensive season from a player who provides the bulk of his value that way.

I mean holly crap. I just freaked myself out a little. I know a lot went wrong in 2013 so it's easy to miss some but this is not good.

I was talking about his hitting but it applies for his defense too. He's very overrated by a lot of fans.

I have to admit he was overrated by me. I thought his defensive value was something you could take to the bank. I figured that cancelled out how overrated he is offensively but damn...

He may only be a +5 run defender and not the freakish elite +20 guy DRS conspired with Butterfield's shifts to make him appear to be.

This bums me out and I didn't even think I could get bummed out about this team anymore.

He played through injuries, got moved to 2B for no reason, and those defensive "run" stats are pretty useless at times. Watch the guy play instead. He's a great defender. His bat may come around big time in 2014. Getting down on Lawrie is pointless. I love the fact he's on the team ready to go with no WBC this year.

You have no idea how hollow this rings to me right now.

I believe the defensive shifts actually significantly penalize Lawrie's defensive metrics, if I remember correctly on how the stats are now calculated (post Lawrie breaking WAR).

It's not that he's a bad player. An average-ish bat and +5 defense is a recipe for a ~3-win player if he can stay healthy. It's probably time to throw out the Evan Longoria comps though unless he surprises in a big way.

Three wins is exactly where Oliver has him but it would also mark a career high. Yep, probably time to stop dreaming on him as a 5 win player. In a vaccuum, it's not necessarily a big deal but it's bad when you're consider how many extra wins this teams needs to find.

I could see Lawrie having a Carlos Gomez-y career arc. Unactualized talent suddenly becomes actual during some random year in his physical prime.

Even if that never happens I think he'll be a consistently above average 3B.

I hate to go all baseball right-wing, but I feel like anybody who doubts his defensive skills or wants to give up on his potential probably needs to watch a bit more baseball.

Or, on the contrary, put your faith in Steamer. I guess the baseball left should still like Lawrie as well.

Lawrie is better player than Gomez, regardless positional value.

There's really no reason to not like him right now. Guy is projected for like 3 wins and is earning 500K. Regardless of what you think his chances are of becoming a 5 WAR stud, a 3 WAR player is still pretty valuable.

No, it's time to panic. Another Snider-esque developmental failure.

This comment is probably egregious.

Don't be afraid, Lawrie 23 is a stud, He has the talent to be top-3 3B in the bigs.

D - plus

Arm - plus

Speed 3B - plus

Hit - above avg

Pop - Avg

Gomez is a solid player but below avg hitter.

I'm going to assume you are one of those guys that overrates him too? But a lot of fans do, it seems to be the norm.

Or, a more likely possibility, you underrate him. You are far too confidant you know what follows here. Feel free to forecast his 2014 season.

I'm giving Lawrie a pass for the season defensively; the injuries, added with a good sample size showing he's a good defender, DRS liking him, and -barfs- the eye test, are a good case to go easy on him imo. Plus, like BTS said, a 5 run defensive 3B with a league average bat and average baserunning is still a 3 win 3rd baseman over 600 PA. (3.0224525043177892918825561312608, to be exact ;) )

We'll talk when Lawrie has a 7.6 fWAR year and is projected pre-season as a 4-5.5 WAR player.

Do you think Gomez will keep that offensive line? lol

He's 80-90 wRC+ and GG defense

I'll tell you.. Being 34 and just mildly successful.. unemployed now actually but was making close around $90k for long time in suburb cost of living environment.. I have zero chance with the super hot 18-22 year old girls. As more than a hook up I mean. I tried. So I went on POF in other countries.. forget about it.. I'm a f'n pimp after 3 hours.

I am in the dumps. Need to get my s*** together.

Why the f*** would you want a relationship with an 18-22 year old anyway? Never again.

I wouldn't with girl from here. No way. They will hop on the better dick first chance they get if theyre hot..

thinking foreign girl might respect being brought to nice home and nice guy. Be a good wife. I just really like younger chicks too. I don't want a girl my age that will be 45 in 10 years and sagging.
