ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 It doesn't mean Floyd was interested in us. Really, any pitcher trying to build their value would be nuts to come to Toronto (or anywhere in the AL East). There should be some appeal to hitters though, especially once we finally eliminate the turf. I can agree that no pitcher trying to build up their value is likely to sign with the Jays, but can we at least get a rumor that the Jays were in on a FA even if said FA signed elsewhere? I mean, we get rumors about Bautista, EE, Rasmus and Stroman/Sanchez being involved in trades, but we're supposed to believe that the Jays are being spurned in complete secrecy? The way I see it is this, where there isn't smoke, there isn't a fire!
Chappy Community Moderator Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 I get the feeling that AA is trying to be overly cautious this winter considering how terribly last season turned out. In all honesty, I don't mind that approach as long as he keeps things moving in the right direction and is not at a complete stall.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Hey, Floyd spurned the Orioles as well. It's not just the Jays who get spurned by some pitchers like Floyd. Except for Tampa, pitching in AL East parks can be a nightmare, especially for flyball pitchers, as Boston, New York, Baltimore and Toronto are band boxes.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 I get the feeling that AA is trying to be overly cautious this winter considering how terribly last season turned out. In all honesty, I don't mind that approach as long as he keeps things moving in the right direction and is not at a complete stall. I've thought about this as well, so I think it's a fair point. If he learned from last winter's moves, that's great, as long as he doesn't develop stage fright. On the other hand, you'd think one lesson learned would be to not give up on FA. One would think that the moves made last off season would help the Jays attract free agents, but they don't seem to be in on any of them.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 I agree. Just getting rid of Arencibia was a help. And Gavin Floyd isn't actually a good pitcher, as his career ERA is 4.48 with a WHIP of 1.34. Put him in any AL East park and he'd likely have an ERA north of 5. We already got burned with Josh Johnson and his 2-8, 6.20 ERA record, who had been injured and declining in Miami, especially after that injury he had in 2011, as he hasn't been the same since. We need someone a little more established, can pitch in the AL East, and is not coming off a major surgery. Gavin Floyd isn't the answer. Come on, AA, get us Santana, Garza, or someone..

The way I see it is this, where there isn't smoke, there isn't a fire! And who said that the "rumors" about Bautista, EE and Rasmus are true? Did Anthopoulos confirm their legitimacy?
Chappy Community Moderator Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 I'm actually kind of hoping AA moves Bautista this winter for a younger MLB SP and a prospect. He can fulfill his desire to bolster the rotation all the while improving the farm and strengthening the team by age.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 And who said that the "rumors" about Bautista, EE and Rasmus are true? Did Anthopoulos confirm their legitimacy? You're right, they're just rumors, there may be some truth to them or none at all. Overall, my comment was directed at the apparent lack of pursuit of any FA by the Jays. Maybe they've been in on guys who have signed elsewhere and it was just kept secret, but I'd think we'd at least hear a few rumors linking the Jays to a couple of them. I don't get why the Jays wouldn't have been in on Infante, for example. Again, maybe they were in on him, but I just think it would've come out if they made an offer. I certainly hope AA is looking to FA to improve the team.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 but I'd think we'd at least hear a few rumors linking the Jays to a couple of them. Why?
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 True. But who's dealing right now? Unless you're the Cardinals or Rangers (Red Sox not included for being in the division), and have decent trading chips, AA's not dealing Bautista for nothing. He's going to want decent SP and prospects for him. Only real fit is the Cardinals, if they have the budget, but are more likely to use Oscar Taveras instead, as they are at their budget limit for 2014. Mariners are a possibility, if they gave us Taijuan Walker and Nick Franklin. Arizona's out due to the acquisition of Mark Trumbo. Keep in mind most teams are near their budgets, and can't just take on Bautista's contract, no matter how reasonably priced it is, especially with the prospect price for him likely sky-high, as AA will probably want MLB ready talent. Look what the D-Backs had to pay in the Trumbo trade, which sent Skaggs and Santiago to LA, and Eaton to Chicago, with Trumbo, Schugel and Jacobs to Arizona.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Why? Because while AA may keep a tight lid on his side, he can't control what the other side does, especially a player agent who'd love to have as many teams as possible interested in his client. It's really no big deal, I'm hoping AA is just being more cautious given last off season and the 3 big (given this year's FA crop) are still out there. As long as they improve the team, it really doesn't matter how long it takes.

We must trudge on. Tickets to retirement party bought.....check (same applies to Edwin......we must never trade)

Tickets to retirement party bought.....check (same applies to Edwin......we must never trade) LOL. I think we can both agree it's a great time to move Bautista considering this f***ed up market. I actually think AA is the type of GM who could be ballsy enough to make this kind of move, but someone like the Beast may put a stop to that. Bautista could land us a solid arm and net us a solid prospect. I was all for the Profar rumor but I'm not sure how much legs that rumor actually had.

Don't use ERA, WHIP or W-L record when evaluating pitchers. They're all misleading stats, and don't usually illustrate the real picture.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Regardless, Floyd still isn't a good pitcher. 9.0 H/9IP, and 3.0 BB/9 isn't exactly encouraging.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 I'm at the point now where I'm not really expecting anything to happen. He is waiting them out Chappy . The price is too much so he is waiting for it to either go down or one of them to set the market . Shark price is 3 prospects which is fair but AA can't move both Stroman and Sanchez.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Floyd for 6M is a great deal (12M if can start +25 games) Is it though? I'd rather have 2 Marcums for that price but probably won't happen.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Whenever a team signs a player, somehow it's AA's fault?! lol A Pitcher trying to build value back after a year of injury would never sign with the Jays yet when they sign elsewhere AA gets the blame ? . I understand that people want value FA signings but when NO FA,s want to play here and especially Pitch here it just isn't happening . Would they have rather given Floyd a 4 year 52 mil contract . That is about what it would have taken

Hopefully, AA learned from the Indians last year who signed Swisher in January and Bourne in February. We'll have to wait and see.

If the Royals signed a 5 year TV deal instead of 10 (back in 2008) they'd be spending nice and stupidly right now, as they'd be rolling in it and I really think it's a market that players would be wanting to head to.

I really don't like to look down upon anyone so I certainly should've worded my comment differently regarding the Royals. I'm not sure I agree that the Royals have a better team, but I won't argue in favor of the Blue Jays at this point. I just don't see why the Jays couldn't attract FA's like Infante, I get that it may be difficult with the elite FA's, but guys like Infante should be signable even if you have to add a year to the contract. Of course, in order to sign a FA, you'd have to pursue him first which the Jays may or may not have done, so who knows. There certainly are no indications that they pursued Infante, just as an example. Hopefully, AA is back to his NINJA days and ends up making some Rasmus/Escobar/Morrow-type trades, but we'll have to wait and see.

I don't completely buy the Toronto can't sign a FA because it's Toronto. But when it comes to where a team is, perception is pretty huge. When the Jays were building their team last year, they probably could have convinced a bunch of FA's beyond Melky to sign. Toronto made dramatic trades last year and improved by 1 win, KC made dramatic trades last year and improved by 14 wins (as much as the trades hurt them and their improvements mostly came from young players already on their roster improving). As inept as I think Dayton Moore is, the fact that the only two members of their starting hitters being in their 30's (and both of them were acquired this off season...Infante and Ioki), in fact their entire bench is in their 20's as well I believe. To me to think that perception and probably reality, that KC isn't ahead of where Toronto is in development of a playoff team is pretty much being a homer.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2013 Author Posted December 16, 2013 Jcrasnick Gavin Floyd has passed physical and agreed to deal with #braves. He'll make $4M base and can earn $4.5M more in incentives.
