Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 ajcbraves 1m #Braves are the "mystery team" that's been talking with Gavin Floyd. Believed to be close to a deal, but not finalized yet.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2013 Author Posted December 14, 2013 Braves Close To Deal With Gavin Floyd The Braves are close to a deal with free agent Gavin Floyd, according to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (via Twitter). While the two sides are nearing agreement, nothing has been finalized yet. Yesterday, it was reported that Floyd was close to inking a deal with an unknown club. Floyd missed most of the 2013 season after having Tommy John surgery in May. In 168 innings with the White Sox in 2012, he posted a 4.29 ERA with 7.7 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 AA is asleep at the wheel I would have liked Floyd in a Blue Jays uniform, though don't you think Floyd would rather pitch in Atlanta instead of Toronto?
Slot Machine Verified Member Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 Yep. Why would Floyd even have wanted to come here.
Ehjays Verified Member Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 Another option gone....I guess we will deal with our rotation from within
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 This probably helps with our pursuit of Samardzija.
leaffie Verified Member Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 MaybeAA thought we already had two recovering from TJ, we didn't need another.
Jays Verified Member Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 Speaking of injured FA pitchers. Anyone think AA tries to pick up Scott Baker on a minor league deal?
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2013 Author Posted December 14, 2013 AA's ineptitude on the FA market is getting ridiculous. Floyd for 6M is a great deal (12M if can start +25 games)
Lawrie22 Verified Member Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 It's actually a good fit. I was going to write in the thread yesterday I bet he goes to the braves

jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Wasn't he really interested in Floyd during the 2011 off season? Does having to give up prospects to acquire players add value to the players we're getting back

Does having to give up prospects to acquire players add value to the players we're getting back It doesn't mean Floyd was interested in us. Really, any pitcher trying to build their value would be nuts to come to Toronto (or anywhere in the AL East). There should be some appeal to hitters though, especially once we finally eliminate the turf.

In single case examples it could be used, but not for every decent free agent the past 3 years
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Another one bites the dust

In single case examples it could be used, but not for every decent free agent the past 3 years It's not an excuse for free agents looking for a long term deal, but it's absolutely one for guys looking to rebuild their value.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 AA's ineptitude on the FA market is getting ridiculous. I'd be interested to know if AA contacted Floyd's agent. Though if I'm in Gavin Floyd's shoes and trying to rebuild my own value, I'd rather pitch in Atlanta over Toronto. If Atlanta gave Floyd $6 million, I'm sure it would have cost Toronto around $9-$10 million to lure him north of the border.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Floyd for 6M is a great deal (12M if can start +25 games) Great deal indeed for Atlanta. A healthy Floyd gives them a very good No 3 starter, and pitching in the NL is a plus. Floyd was already a solid pitcher in the AL, so I'd expect if he's healthy, he likely could even have better numbers.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 It's not an excuse for free agents looking for a long term deal, but it's absolutely one for guys looking to rebuild their value. It makes sense on individual cases, im with you on that. Im just saying that we cant simply write off every single free agent who isnt looking for a multiple year deal ( who Alex doesnt even sign regardless). At some point we have to question this front office's ability to "woo" players and convince them to sign here.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Meh...injured guy who walks a fair amount of guys and is a #3 starter are his best. Don't the Jays have enough of this already? Don't know why so many tears are being shed for him.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Floyd http://www.bluejaysmessageboard.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=443&d=1387064281 Umm the guy signed with the Braves...not sure what the point of making this pic was other than to have another opportunity to suck Andrew Friedman's dick and get high fives for it.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 How does he walk a fair amount of guys..the numbers are right in front of you. Why would you make this up
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 How does he walk a fair amount of guys..the numbers are right in front of you. Why would you make this up If you walk more than Josh Towers per 9, you walk too many.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Never really expected Floyd to sign here even with an overpay . When your trying to rebuild value like Johnson and floyd even for a couple of mil more you still go to the NL and to a good team if you can . Why would any pitcher come to TO to try and build value . I don't know how anyone can blame AA on this . Messenger had no other team so AA missing on him was maybe a bad move but Floyd and JJ had no intention on coming here. If we want an FA starter we are going to have to way overpay to a Santana or a Jiminez and even then probably add another year.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Not a bad deal for Atlanta--but it shows the limits of Atlanta's budget, plus there's no guarantee what Floyd will bring post TJ-surgery. Remember, the Braves lost Malholm and Hudson to free agency--and their farm isn't ready to produce new arms yet(Graham, Gilmartin aren't close to MLB ready.)
Chappy Community Moderator Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 I'm at the point now where I'm not really expecting anything to happen.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Still got about 3 months--anything could happen by then. Could be worse--at least we're not selling for junk like Jemile Weeks, like Baltimore is because ownership refuses to raise payroll, even after 2 winning seasons.. because of their concerns regarding the costs of arb raises to Chris Davis, Matt Wieters, etc. And Baltimore might actually be worse than Toronto right now due to their failure to add starting pitching to upgrade a rotation that was already mediocre.
