But he's declining from the best hitter in baseball to a mere star on a great contract. He makes it sound like he's not an asset and that's patently false.

Even though last year did go nowhere, it did not project to preseason. Trading Bautista would have not made sense unless it was for significantly above his value.

I think ZIPs had them at 90 wins. Steamer too. And if you don't like projection systems, almost every talking head considered them at least contenders for the AL East preseason.

 

Once those mistakes were made, trading Bautista would have been tough.

Not only do we weaken the roster in 2014 and 2015, lose a year of control and move a bat for a more volatile asset, but we also put ourselves in a position where management likely feels pressure to hand out a massive extension after two years.
