Wow. I can't imagine there's much money involved so I wonder what the A's are thinking.

Well sure, but taking on a 10 million dollar reliever is completely contrary to everything that Beane has ever really done. There's no need to take n that kind of deal of all you want to do is get rid of Weeks

ITT: Posters pretend that Jemile Weeks is an MLB regular and that closers are worthless.

 

Not sure what you're all smoking but in real life I like this deal for the A's. Weeks isn't a guy.

Yet, the Orioles probably got more for Johnson than the Tigers got for Fister.

I don't think it's parting with Weeks that's odd. I think the bigger surprise is that a team with generally low payroll flexibility is willing to dish out the $$$ for Johnson. Especially since they have a solid in-house option like Sean Doolittle.

 

As far as value goes, I definitely agree that Oakland came out better in this trade. Jemile Weeks isn't a good baseball player (the same could be said for his brother these days).

Johnson will dominate in Oakland and they will trade him for a profit. As it stands, he'll likely out-WAR Weeks next year FWIW.

That's a good point that I didn't even think of. They could flip him at the deadline and actually come out with a decent prospect (well, certainly something better than Weeks).

 

The fans might bitch a little if Johnson is doing good, but it's a great way to make profit out of nothing.

Dammit I'd trade any one or two of them for a decent second baseman

He gave up Hinske for Billy Koch. Koch and Hinske both did good in 2002... Long term the move meant nothing as they both crashed.

 

But if Hinske hadn't of busted up his hand I think he would of had a nicer career and it would of been viewed as a bad move... but anyway point is Beane has valued the "established" closer on occasion.

Probably, but I still hate it. Johnson's not even the #2 guy in their pen. Cook and Doolittle and miles ahead of Johnson.

 

s***, didn't think about that till just now... I was depending on a Cook / Doolittle combo giving me a saves / holds combo in the DDL.

Great deal for Oak. Dotn know what anyone is thinking either. Weeks blows. BAsically the A's just added some salary and picked up a legit closer. Not a guy that youre not sure what you will get next season.

 

Also, based on this.. lol @ Janssen as main piece for Porcello.

It feels a lot like teams have learned that closers aren't as valuable as once thought. I've been skeptical all offseason that the Jays' relievers will return the riches people have been expecting them to.

 

Actually I've been busy and actually just saw the Fister deal.. now I dont understand how the market works I guess

This is such an Oakland-like move. The guys groundball tendencies will thrive in that ballpark. Then they sell him for something useful when he inevitably outperforms his xFIP by a full run.

 

Also I agree with the most recent posts; WTF are you guys thinking that Weeks is ACTUALLY worth something?

Dombrowski's just a dumb GM who lucked into some good deals.

 

It's kinda funny, he's usually the guy who sells off buckets of prospects to get major league guys.
