KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2015 Posted June 19, 2015 Hey guys, I would appreciate quick thoughts on my article! It's my first foray into more mathematical analysis. Thanks. http://www.breakingblue.ca/2015/06/19/how-accurately-can-we-predict-a-hitters-strikeout-and-walk-rates/ So basically you're saying I should add Soto to my roster in the LOD?
baubau Verified Member Posted June 19, 2015 Posted June 19, 2015 No worries guys, I am just yanking your chain. The article itself was solid and I'll read the most recent one you posted later GD.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 22, 2015 Posted June 22, 2015 Interesting how Canadians have done so well. I wonder what that means for Naylor, Soroka, Demi, Gordon and Senior.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted June 22, 2015 Posted June 22, 2015 Interesting how Canadians have done so well. I wonder what that means for Naylor, Soroka, Demi, Gordon and Senior. Hard to say. Could simply mean the negative selection bias is waning.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 Quick post about Norris' start. http://www.breakingblue.ca/2015/06/25/down-on-the-farm-daniel-norris-with-an-encouraging-start/
Nafro Verified Member Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 Excellent articles. Great to see a recap of watching a game, mixed with some of the more fundamental advanced stats.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 Contrary to popular belief, the Breaking Blue writers do not, in fact, watch baseball games on spreadsheets.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 I think it's really a shame that idea has any traction. You guys don't pay for MLB.tv just to ignore it.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 Contrary to popular belief, the Breaking Blue writers do not, in fact, watch baseball games on spreadsheets. Can't confirm that for all...
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 Your refusal to admit that each of us watches just as much as, if not more baseball, than the majority of people even though we like stats is pretty hilarious.

Until you start scouting players from the Radio you aint f***ing nothing

Dude, I never said any of that. Are you 5 yrs old and can't take a joke
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 Until you start scouting players from the Radio you aint f***ing nothing Do I have to start a bug collection too? We miss you Grant ((

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 LTBF clearly only watches the Blue Jays. How the f*** does he have any right to say anything? Christ, put that idiot on ignore already. He never says anything worthwhile.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 No we don't You make a very good point.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 Yay DJ LeMahieu is good at baseball
TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 Got to agree. Blog needs another SABr world promotion
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 Where is JFaS nowadays? Too important for us
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 Where is JFaS nowadays? Rumor has it he's in Mexico doing a goat breeding business with Ang. I'll try and confirm with my BJMB sources.
fireballW Verified Member Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 Bautista's xOBP is pretty low, do you know why? Said I expect a breakout from Smoak the whole time. I really, really hope they start playing him regularly. Honestly, he could be a legitimate replacement for EE if they needed to trade him before his contract expires next year. I would sign Smoak to a reasonable extension immediately and let him run with our 1B job for the next few years.
fireballW Verified Member Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 Trading EE and extending Smoak an extra year or two at cheap makes a lot of sense, especially if Gibbons continue to insist on Navarro DH sometimes. Call up Pompey and have Colabello and Navarro for DH duties.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 The only things I can think of at the moment would be to incorporate something like foul%, or possibly better but probably requiring your own pitchfx database would be something incorporating pitchfx's nasty factor for balls in the zone. I would assume (without checking) that pitchers are a lot more careful pitching to Bautista than most other batters, and would tend to nibble more. Balls placed well would be a lot harder to put into play, and would probably result in more foul balls and deeper counts, which would lead to a higher than expected walk rate. The other thing to note could be pitch type. Bautista only sees 51% fastballs this year for example, compared to someone like EE who sees 59% or the league average of 57.3%. The league average fastball velocity is also almost a full mph slower than the average Bautista sees. I was thinking about edge%, re: your comment on nibbling.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 Hey guys, Wondering about potentially adding more writers to this. With North and I both very busy it's quite difficult to shoulder the load ourselves, so we'd be interested in hearing from you guys. We'd be looking for very active, committed writers who have an open mind and lots to say. You can PM North or I to express your interest. North is dumn though js. I won't be here for the next week (I get back right after the trade deadline! booooo) but I'll be sure to get back to you as soon as I do receive your message. I've always wondered if it would be practical to take some of the discussion here and edit it into phony round table pieces. Some of the best and most statistically sound analysis of things Blue Jays related happens here and basically gets lost to the ether. I think transforming some of that into blog pieces was sort of what admin had in mind in the first place but the problem has been developing a mechanism to do consistently and effectively. There's some good stuff here between the trolling and flaming. Would be nice to tidy it up and deliver it to the world.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 We're very, very interested in adding someone who would like to write up breaking news, game previews, game recaps and the like. Mainly breaking news. Obviously wouldn't turn down any analysis, either.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 http://www.breakingblue.ca/2015/08/12/has-russell-martin-changed-his-approach/ Russell Martin is popping the ball up a LOT. Also, welcome to our new writer Baubau, who will begin writing shortly whenever the owner decides to get him signed up, whenever that may be.

baubau Verified Member Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 Sup peeps. Just posted my first article on Smoak. http://www.breakingblue.ca/2015/08/20/can-he-really-smoak-it/ Feedback?
