I played Milly's Math-house on the first iMac when I was 2, everyday. I could use the computer better than my parents, and by the time I was in Kindergarden I was already past a Grade 3 math level. As far as becoming a saberist, I started on the old Jays forum and learned from everyone, finally venturing to FanGraphs and Tom Tango's blog. It's only been a year and a half since I learned what FIP was.

For our fanbase, that idea would actually be beneficial for the team - knowledgeable bunch. Unfortunately, I'd have to say that most fanbases are dumber than bricks, on the whole.

 

really?? I've never found this to be the case. I've listened to Yankees fans sing the Canadian anthem and know all the words. I've met KC fans who asked me about the OHL. Boston fans are incredibly smart, Boston is an incredibly smart area (MIT, Harvard, a lot of tech). Yankees fans the same, a lot of Wall street guys, a lot of street smart guys.

 

I remember back on the old board in May or so, some guy kept on suggesting Garrett Jones trade ideas... imagine if you ran the crowd source algorithm on the old board at it's height??

And it doesn’t really matter, because secondly, I’m pretty sure the guys behind the brand new Jays-focussed analytics blog Breaking Blue are going to own us all in a matter of months anyway, so the Jays will probably be snapping them up any minute now to take whatever position is available.

 

Obviously I half-joke, but their work– which first came to my attention after Chris Carruthers’ post at FanGraphs Community Research (which is also on his own site) on the effect R.A. Dickey had on pitchers following him was getting all kinds of Twitter love yesterday– is slightly terrifying. In a good way, I mean– in terms of ingenuity and execution, and also in making me (and several other folks sitting around here in theScore’s blog jail) feel mighty old. Mighty f***ing old indeed.

Also a random thing i noticed about the blog. Sometimes when i go to the site i can't find the link to the message board. Not that i care because i know how to get here - but we could potentially be losing out on some members especially in the light of all this buzz about Chris. You're a very talented writer and quite smart, you could probably bring quite a bit to the table if your work at PPP is any indication.

 

I've been focusing more on hockey stats recently than baseball stats. I guess it's due to the fact that a lot has been done in baseball (though, as Chris has shown with TIPS, still areas left to be explored especially with MiLB data), but hockey is still an undiscovered country relatively speaking. Feels like there's a lot to explore in hockey, at least to me.
