Why would the Cubs be coveting major league OFs? Common sense says they should be looking to acquire elite minor league pitching given their current timeline.

Santana has a way superior track record and has performed in the AL

This guy is a josh Johnson waiting to happen

Ervin is taking advantage of the circumstance. He's not the big deal.

To me, Samardzija reminds of JA Happ. Take what looks like a good starter from a crappy team and hope for the best.

J.A. Happ career high IP 166, Samaradzija last year 213.2 IP.

Samardzija and Happ in the same sentence?

Shark xFIP: 3.85

Happ xFIP: 4.44

Shark WAR/180: 2 (which is counting multiple seasons as a reliever)

Happ WAR/180: 1.5

Shark Steamer: 2.8

Happ Steamer: 1.0

There is no logic in this at all. Samardzija reminds you of Happ because they both pitched on crappy teams?

And apparently, at some point or another, J.A. Happ was "a good starter."

Crappy NL teams.

Happ had 4.16 ERA and 1.395 WHIP in 6 years in the NL.

Samardzija had 4.19 ERA and 1.355 WHIP in 6 years in the NL.

Sure, Samardzija seems to be more durable and a better pitcher but he still reminds me of Happ too much to pass unless the price was right for us which i doubt it.

ERA and WHIP are not the statistics you should be using to evaluate these players. Dive deeper my friend.

That means Jeff Locke must be an elite starter if we are using ERA to judge pitchers. Shocked his name wasn't mentioned by that poster lol

So I guess Felix Hernandez reminds him of Happ as well, since didn't he only win 12 or 13 games when he won his Cy Young lol?

Does anyone subscribe to BA? If so, would you mind posting the CHC scouting reports for the 2014 top prospects? I took a quick look around and didn't find it posted anywhere, if it is I apologize.

I'm mostly interested in what position their young players are expected to play long-term. Examining the possibility the of the Shark trade expanding (ie the Johnson trade) to better satisfy the needs of both teams.

I'm curious to see if the Cubs missing out on Tanaka will drop the price in acquiring Shark. Shark has said that a Tanaka signing would help in convincing him sign a contract with the Cubs. Maybe Sanchez + Nolin get's it done. The Cubs are loaded in position player prospects and adding two pitching prospects might tempt them.

Too much?

I doubt the Nolin addition gets it done. They prob asked for both Sanchez and Stroman.. I wouldn't do that but would build package around either

They did ask for both Sanchez and Stroman.

This was before missing out on Tanaka. Tanaka surely would have expedited the rebuild process which I'm sure then the Cubs would want to hang onto shark unless they got an overpay - ie Stroman and Sanchez +. Now that Tanaka is gone I'm curious if the Cubs are more willing to deal him. They need some young pitching to emerge when their elite position prospects are emerging.

We'll see..

They are still likely looking for one of Stroman or Sanchez plus a couple over minor league pieces. They are not going to sell him off for nothing. I think we are better off going the Jimenez or Garza route and keeping Stroman for the middle of the year and then Sanchez for middle of next year.

Oh i know.

That's why i pondered if Sanchez + Nolin would be enough. Certainly our arguable #1 prospect and another top 10 prospect would not be selling him off for nothing. I'm just curious to see if the Cubs are going to drop their asking price from Stro and Sanchez + to something more reasonable.

Doesn't make sense for them to drop their asking price now. This is just like Dickey last year. If they wait out the market someone should overpay and if no one meets their price it's not like he's a bad asset to have. It's not like their asking for the moon either, Stroman and Sanchez, as eggregious a price as it may seem, is a bargain compared to what the Jays paid for Dickey last year.

Sure it does.

2 years of control = biggest haul. Shark said the Tanaka signing would make it more likely he's signs an extension. The Tanaka signing would have also expedited the rebuild which having shark around would be more of an asset. If they don't think they can sign him they may as well trade him at his peak value.

Maybe It's wishful thinking on my part.

Yeah but peak value isn't now. Peak value is after Garza, Jimenez and Santana are signed.

Yeah....i didn't necessarily mean trade for him today. Just before spring training.

I guess it all depends on what other teams are offering. You could justify to the fans a package around Sanchez. Arguably our top prospect who has #1 stuff that's in AA and close to be ready. He would fit nicely with the emerging talent with the likes of Baez, Bryant and Solar.

I'm off to work though.
