Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 There are a few interesting points that Davidi talked about in his latest report (didn't see all of them posted here): Shi seems to feel we're definitely interested in Hanigan, and feels we will make a run at Samardzija. Trade market extremely slow right now, and likely won't pick up until the winter meetings. Feels there's zero chance of Halladay or Tanaka. Feels the Jays will be aggressive on the trade market first, and then fall back to the free agent market if they can't get what they need.

leaffie Verified Member Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Interesting debate on XML today about Bautista. Kennedy and ? (Sorry). Their take was that Toronto should be looking to trade Reyes to Cards. Said Cards would give up just about anything to get him and they both felt Reyes would put the Cards into WS. Jays could expect to get. Two starters for him. Debate was really about who they should try and get. One of them thought they could get Tavares and Shellby Miller. The other would ask for Tavares, Miller and Carlos Martinez. But would not do any deal without Martinez. Reyes just might be more valuable than JB.

Cardinals would be reallllllly overpaying if they did any of those deals. Unless maybe we were paying like the whole salary. Even then its iffy.

If we could get Miller and Tavarez for Reyes I do it right now. Then we move Bautista to the Rangers for Profar or Andrus and Holland. Wee become, younger, cheaper and better.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2013 Author Posted November 14, 2013 The Blue Jays plan to turn to the trade market before trying to sign any big free agents, writes Shi Davidi of SportsNet.ca. The Jays appear likely to try to deal for Jeff Samardzija of the Cubs, and they already asked about Reds catcher Ryan Hanigan, who may have become superfluous when Cincinnati signed Brayan Pena. They may have also considered a run at Astros catcher Jason Castro. Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos notes that the Jays are not likely to deal veteran players for prospects. They could, however, trade catcher J.P. Arencibia, or a reliever. DO it

leaffie Verified Member Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 They both talked about it being an overpayment. But also said that they have always coveted him, and that he would fit so well with the team. They realize his injury history, but thought last year was a fluke and that if healthy, was one of the top three SS in the majors. Said SS is in such short supply this year and that the cards really need an up grade.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Ridiculous to trade for a catcher. There's no need. Free agents abound. #SaveTheStroman

Said SS is in such short supply this year and that the cards really need an up grade. I can certainly see why the Cards would want Reyes, but it's so hard to see it happening. I'm not even sure if they could fit his full salary on their payroll right now. I think their situation is pretty tight, but I'm not sure. I'm certain that Toronto would be sternly rebuked if they asked for either of Miller/Taveras, let alone both of them. The Cards would likely give up Martinez to get Reyes, if they have the payroll space, but Martinez alone probably isn't enough to make it worth it for Toronto. What else could St. Louis add? Maybe they could put Allen Craig in the deal, since 1B isn't big enough for him and Matt Adams, and it would free up a bit of payroll space. But then Toronto has a hole at SS and they're trying to win in the present... Anyways, it's all moot because Reyes is almost certainly on AA's "untouchable / would not trade" whiteboard magnet list.
theblujay Verified Member Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 I just want to reiterate how backwards I think this philosophy is. Sure, there are landmines on the FA market, but there are also huge bargains to be had every year. A f***ing world series was just won due in large part to a single successful free agency season. Spend your offseason being aggresive on this market: SP - Colon, Kazmir, Burnett, Hudson, Haren, Yoon, Hammel, Lewis, Floyd 2B - Peralta, Infante, Ellis, Punto, C - Ruiz OF - Gutierrez, Young, Baker Lots of guys out there who will sign on cost-effective deals and help a team. We've already seen Nick Punto sign for nothing. It's gonna piss me off when we trade Stroman/Sanchez and end up with equal value as signing a couple of those guys.

We better not trade anything for him. Samardzija is a decent asset, but trading a ton of surplus value in Stroman or Sanchez makes it almost impossible to get value out of him.

I'm convinced Stroman or Sanchez and Hutchison are goners this off season, if not all 3. The guy has gone retard. Just sign Ruiz, Infante and get a pitcher. Trade Janssen or Santos and NT JPA.
leaffie Verified Member Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Kennedy said , you start your ask "high" and maybe settle for something between the two. But the point was that they both thought trading Reyes would help the Jays more than Bautista.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 I'm curious as to what the market for Reyes would look like right now. He was a 4-win player in 2012, played at a 3.5 win pace last year, and Steamer has him at about the same pace this year. Owed 4/86 for his age 31-34 seasons. If you project something like 10-12 wins over the next 4 years, you're talking in the vicinity of $7-9 million per projected win. Obviously a contract that a lot of teams would be interested in, but not really something they should be paying a premium for. Certainly there's no grounds for asking for a Taveras or Miller. Given that Toronto has neither a replacement 2B or replacement SS, I don't think they'd get offered enough to warrant moving him while also trying to win themselves. When the charade of competitiveness is over, they might get a decent but unspectacular prospect for him in the offseason provided he maintains his play. you just know we are all waiting to see what colossally stupid move AA starts with this off season. no one is sure if they should cry for the season we are going to have to watch or be happy for the brighter future, that will come after the disaster that is coming, where we may finally be rid of AA and Beeston.
Arjun Nimmala Vancouver Canadians - A+ SS It's been slow going at the start of the season for Nimmala, but on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with his 3rd home run and 3 RBI. Explore Arjun Nimmala News >
