SantosLHalper21 Verified Member Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 The Jays as you already know announced today that they have decided to not qualify Josh Johnson, meaning he becomes a free agent. Toronto receives no compensation if he doesn't sign with the Jays. The bigger news I found was that they non-tendered Rajai Davis. Under the new hitting coach who preaches waiting that extra split second and spraying the ball gap to gap, Davis I feel could have been one of the star pupils of Seitzer's team. Davis provides a decent glove, a decent bat, and elite base-running. With Davis hitting 9th and Reyes hitting 1st, it would only give the Jays that much more speed to worry about. Sad thing though is that John Gibbons hates the idea of being creative on the base paths, electing to try and plug them up and hit grand slams, rather than double stealing, delay stealing, or whatever else. Melky Cabrera, hopefully with the offseason surgery he had can return to the level he was playing at pre-Steroid suspension. However, since he was a user, its obvious now he'll be more susceptible to injuries because of it. The Jays winning percentage with Davis was .389, and when he was hurt, it was .524. The Jays 11 game winning streak happened when he was DL'ed. However, that 11 game streak was a result of very good pitching along with timely hitting. It wasn't because Davis wasn't out there. Until he starts hitting righties breaking stuff better, Davis will always be that 4th OF taking hacks against lefties and switch-hitting. If he ever figures out how to hit a breaking ball, he becomes more dangerous than Jose Reyes. I feel under Seitzer, he could very well figure it out, however we may never know. Hopefully they do resign him, but as it stands right now, it looks like the Jays are pooling their resources in going after a starting pitcher or two...which isn't so bad either.

Actually, rather than just dismissing this, I'd actually like to take a look at this. Why the f*** even bring this up? Not only is it insanely stupid to look at such a small sample size, not only is it dumn to think that an average player's absence can have this much impact in the game of baseball, but it isn't even supporting your point. And then the double negative in your last sentence made my eyes f***ing bleed. All in all, 2/10, jimmies = rustled.
Nox Verified Member Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 I'm going to give you a giant benefit of the doubt and assume that you didn't know that a QO would be $14.1 million for one year. Now you know. 3.2 SB / $1M. Seems like a deal to me. Hater.
The_DH Verified Member Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 No he's right. Give him the qualifying offer. $14.1 is about right for Davis. Also maybe he could start at 2b as he has some speed. Maybe start at catcher as well and run between the positions. The OP is a visionary.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 Also maybe he could start at 2b as he has some speed. Didn't a JaysTalk caller suggest Eric Thames should be our 2B at one point?
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 3.2 SB / $1M. Seems like a deal to me. Hater. Rajai 14.1M = Billy Hamilton 25M
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 What are they supposed to do? Overpay him (again) to be a 4th OF? His speed has helped win some games but is likely to want a multi year deal and a chance to start. He wouldn't get either here. He's had the chance to take a starting role with the Jays over the course of his tenure here and hasn't handled it well or else they wouldn't have gone after Melky in the offseason. They have Gose, who if not traded, could be a 4th OF for his speed. Pillar could be. They could sign someone to a cheaper rate to be a 4th OF with the same tools for less. His speed will be missed but other than that they can find someone for less than $2.5M. He's also 33. That speed will start to come down soon.
The_DH Verified Member Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 Didn't a JaysTalk caller suggest Eric Thames should be our 2B at one point? During the world series years I remember people suggesting Joe Carter play 3b, saying it wasn't too hard. Toronto fans have to be the least knowledgeable.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 I like Rajai but his time with us is done Accept it and move on Some NL team will pay him too much for his stolen bases and ignore his defensive liabilities
GD Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 During the world series years I remember people suggesting Joe Carter play 3b, saying it wasn't too hard. Toronto fans have to be the least knowledgeable. I wish I had seen Cecil Fielder play 2B.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 He really, really is a great base stealer though. Gose can outrun him in a 100 yard dash I'm sure, but Rajai has the base stealing instincts. His problem is defense (despite the occasional spectacular play he's mostly terrible), doesn't get on base enough for a speedster and is a liability against RHP. He's a niche player who will be given a bigger role than he deserves by some NL team that wants to get "faster". Edit: Hopefully the Phillies
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 Letting Rajai go leaves to us +4 millions to improve the roster; You can get the same or better production of Gose/Pillar by the minimum salary. +4 Rajai +14.1 Johnson +1 Kawasaki
The_DH Verified Member Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 I wish I had seen Cecil Fielder play 2B. I saw it. The game was incredible. He and Pat Borders alternated between 2b and 3b. They alternated between lefty bats and right. Pitch selection was designed to keep it away from Fielder. That was managing.

I don't remember who it was, but a poster on the previous board suggested Mark Teahen should be our starting 2B prior to the start of the 2012 season lol. Of course that guy got himself banned in hilarious fashion. Sort of just imploded after that.

Who thinks they could actually catch a major league pitcher far less frame the pitch.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 Wilner's morons just keep at it though: Now listen. I don't expect most baseball fans to understand what qualifying offers and compensation draft picks are about. But if you DON'T understand them then just keep it to yourself, read about it if you want to know, and don't make yourself look like an idiot on Twitter by spouting off about it.

SantosLHalper21 Verified Member Posted November 5, 2013 Author Posted November 5, 2013 Wow never knew this was going to get so much flack. I never said to qualify him If we can get him on a decent deal of 2.5, I say sign him. He still has some value...and don't use age as an excuse for his speed being on the decline. Rickey Henderson stole over 66 bases with Oakland at the age of 39. 37 the following season. I mean its not 100 like in his earlier years, but its far above the league average. I feel like Davis has the ability to swipe 100 bases in a season if given the playing time, and the green light from Gibbons. Yes his speed did decline, but it was still miles ahead of the league average. (Henderson) Whatever though, trying to have a decent discussion about the benefits of Rajai Davis apparently has fallen on deaf ears. Whatever.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 Why do you think that? I,m very sure AA will not give up on JPA. He will be the Buffalo catcher/first baseman/DH trying to fix his bat. I,m actually fine with that. I just want a defensive catcher that can contribute nd Ruiz has always been my choice
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 Why do you think that? Whether we agree with it or not, the defensive metrics the last 2 years appear to be less cruel to him than we are, and he has big power. Some team out there would no doubt love to get and try to "fix" him at the plate. Worse case for us, we stash him in AAA and see if that clears his head, since he should still have options left.
Jays Verified Member Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 Who thinks they could actually catch a major league pitcher far less frame the pitch. JP Arencibia?
Jays Verified Member Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 I,m very sure AA will not give up on JPA. He will be the Buffalo catcher/first baseman/DH trying to fix his bat. Can a slow bat and poor pitch recognition be fixed? Might as well turn him into a 50 stolen base threat too... if he can even get on base that many times
