That wasn't even a troll call. I felt it well placed and got his point across quite well. That's not easy to do on Wilner's show.

Why thank you :)

I also consciously decided against correcting him when he said I was in St. John's NFLD (I'm in Saint John, NB). Wanted to start off on a positive note.

No worries buddy. That's how you get your point across. Most people would just call in and act like idiots and get hung up on. He let you keep going even though he hated the #ArencibiaLine reference. He mumbled something after you said it haha

I say "a lot people are starting to refer to it facetiously as the Arencibia line"

He says "ah, that's unfortunate"

LOL

He should have just said how stupid it was.

Make it stop... it is so classless.

The Arecibia line is hilarious. It's classless to blame a poor season on an injury with a month left in the season and when he is still playing. It's classless to call out a decent MLB catcher for not having "MLB quality tools". It's classless to get in to arguments with fans on social media. JPA deserves whatever he gets.

Oh, the drawing. That was me.:P

I gave Zaun some pants in this one and made him a bit fatter for Hayhurst's benefit. Given the response I'll consider doing another stop motion vid. Anyone want to help story board? What would you want to see happen in the vid. I kind of want Wilner as the suck up student in class and Hayhurst as the slacker. Anyone good with sound editing? Or slicing together audio?

I'd be down to help ace. Not sure if anyone else has stepped up already though.

I honestly don't think the Arencibia Line that funny. But I don't think that's the point of it. I think what's funny are the things that happen as a result of the idea, trolling Wilner, trolling JP, twitter bombing the baseball world, funny videos, songs, cartoons, jokes and articles that are indirectly or directly related to it.

As far as JP goes. He crossed the line trying to control/harm/threaten Hayhurst and Zaun's jobs just because he's not any good at his. He crossed the line trying to silence the press, rather than trying to improve. Finally as a fan he crossed the line by telling us that we can't have an opinion, and basically to shut up, cause we haven't played.

The Zaun/Hayhurst ripping is so much more ridiculous now that the full-season stats are in. It's funny to take a step back.

The player with the worst OBP in league history ripped into commentators for "misinforming the fans" with regards to his offensive contributions. He has the third-worst wRC+ by a catcher in league history yet has repeatedly said that he's one of the best catchers in the league in terms of "production". When the Giants came to Toronto, Arencibia compared himself favourably to Buster Posey. Buster Posey had the fourth-best wRC+ for a catcher in NL history in 2012. They are polar opposites of historic proportion. You'd be hard-pressed to come up with two more contrasting active offensive players at the same position.

This is what we're dealing with. He's more than just your average unlikable athlete.

I believe Richard Griffin compared him to Posey. The only difference being that Posey has won a couple of rings. The 140 points (yes that is correct 140 points!) of on base percentage does not matter.

For a reporter to say this. To say that Posey and Arencibia are the same except for rings... it means there is deep, incredibly irreparable problems in the larger Blue Jay eco system. There needs to be a deep and final house cleaning. Fire everybody. Fire Beeston, Fire AA, Fire Griffin, Fire Wilner, Fire the travelling the secratary, the ball boys, the grounds crew, Fire Stoeten, Fire me, Fire you.

Fire everybody over the age of 25 including all the fans. Anybody under 25 needs to pass an IQ test, the SAT, a Bill James test, and a scouting test. .

And actually Zaun, and Hayhurst can stay, along with the base of fans who passed the above mentioned test, they rebuild over 15 years.

The point of it, I think, is that there is this huge disconnection between AA and the fans. AA speaks to "Beeston" like fans. "Sorry boys, I didn't get you enough starting pittchers. Remeber when we had Jack Morris and Dave Stewart?? I'll do it this winter boys, drink your Labatts, I mean Bud, and watch the leafs.... I'll get to work this winter and get you some starting pitching. I feel for you, I am you, you are me. I love you. Lets all be friends."

However AA (and the organization) refuse to engage the baseball prospectus type personalities and fans. Not participating in that event was so telling. The fans are going on and on about Arencibia... but the front office is replying "we hear you. we're working on getting starters"...

Fans - "We hate Arencibia, he's a tool, his on base percentage is .228 or something,"

AA - "I listen to you because I love you. Now sit tight I will get you some starters"

Fans - "Huhhh?? Yeah, starters could help. But I've just been going on about Arencibia and the second basemen. They have like a .240 combined on base percentage. If you look at OPS+ for all positions, everything is OK, left field a little weak, but OK you say Melky's tumour removal will help, but second and catcher are dramatically low (50s!)... now what about improving these positions.... it might be a route to a pretty good offense!"

AA - "Yes we hear you on that. We love the fans. We love the little people and we're going to get you the starting pitchers you deserve!"

Fans - "OK... ummm. You're not listening are you?? ArencibiaLine... on base percentage??"

AA - "Bad words! Bad Words! Stop insulting Cito. If you don't behave we won't get you your starters!"

It really does feel like the front office is only hearing the voices of fans that agree with their decisions. At the outset of the season AA needs to publicly come out and admit going with JPA and trading all of that catching depth was a mistake. It's really the easiest way to make amends with the portion of the fan base that actually knows whats going on out there. The issue is that AA/Beeston/The Blue Jays value some fanbases more than others. I understand that AA and Beeston want to grow the game in Canada and to do that they need to build momentum. The influx of attention and attendance of casuals has been great for the organization. That being said pandering your personnel decisions to the fan-base equivalent of the lowest common denominator is bad business. JP needs to go, pretty hair and Twitter followers be damned.

Do you honestly think that AA gives one flying s*** about what any fan thinks and made any personnel decisions based on it? If you do, you're as delusional as JPA about his productivity

Posted
What a second here. Are people actually trying to say that the fans should be running the team? f*** that.

er, no

More sounds like people think AA should be listening to fans wants and making decisions based on them. The reality is if a GM listens to fans, he becomes a fan.

This isn't excusing or defending AA's bad decisions or the organization's poor talent evaluation, but let's face it, the majority of fans really have no idea how s***** JPA is. Sure they see a low batting average and realize he's not perfect, but 20 HR excuses a lot for the masses. The vocal minority is just that, a minority.

They're interested in growing the brand but I also believe they do try to put winning first as well. I know they listen to fans opinions. I don't think it influences decisions very much outside of non-personnel decisions like in stadium experience and broadcasting stuff.

Quote from AA about the catching position from the Toronto Star.

“We need to upgrade the production.”

(What about the defense, game calling, pitch framing, and ability to hit and get on base?)

I would think that is all part of "production." Isn't it?
