On June 17, 2011 Adam Lind's OPS maxed out at 1.019 and it was a steady decline from there - finishing the season with an OPS of .734. The exact same thing is happening on nearly the exact same date this year. On June 16, 2013 Adam Lind's OPS maxed out at .979 and has since dropped to under .910.

How can I guy go from looking so good to so bad nearly instantly?

May 31 - June 16, 2013

.438 .448 .688 1.135

June 17 - July 3, 2013

.213 .224 .447 .671

The scariest thing is Lind has 1 BB in the last 18 games - that's f***ing JPA/Boni territory.

We've seen these bipolar streaks time and time again with Adam Lind. Only in 2009 he was able to sustain it for pretty much an entire season.

What gives?

16 days is one of those massive samples I've heard so much about, isn't it?

16 days.

1 year.

3 months.

All examples I used in my post. If you're watching Lind like I am you can see it's not just luck the guy is literally hot and cold.

Quick answer; BABIP regression.

Is that what you honestly think? You think this is the same player as 3 weeks ago?

Quick answer; BABIP regression.

The babip this year was due for a regression, but it's not only that. He looks like a totally different hitter at the plate now. His swing looks different (almost loopy), he's swinging at a lot more out of the zone. Even early in the year when he wasn't hitting for much power he was walking a lot. That's stopped as well.

But it's everything. Even the way he takes pitches - he's not nearly as quiet as he was before. It was like he was in some kind of hypnotic trance before, and now it's like he's woken up and the game's sped up on him.

Agree. Seems to me whatever is between his ears is getting in the way of his natural talent. He's thinking too much, not keeping his eye on the ball, etc.

I think he's putting pressure on himself to not suck because he sees how badly half of his teammates suck so in trying to pick up their slack he's actually doing worse than before. The drop in walks is telling - his swing has gotten too aggressive.

Yup. And three years ago. And two years ago. And last year etc...

I was about to blindly defend Lind by saying his K rates are probably down and his line drive rates are probably up compared to 2011/2012. Then I looked it up and found out that neither is true.

Lind does this every year. Goes on a hot streak and then falls apart.

It was different this year because he did it early on and his overall numbers looked ridiculous.

If he started off OPSing .600 through the first three months and then had a crazy July, people barely would've discussed it.

His plate discipline has gone out the window. All through his hot streak he was patient, but still going after his pitch if he got it, and most importantly, not chasing the low breaking balls and high fastballs. He's now the complete opposite, passive at he plate, not going after his pitch, and chasing the garbage.

as fans we shouldn't dwell on the negative and remember the hot streak or his other great stats like HBB/S (half breed Babies/Season).

Has he seriously walked just once in his last 20+ games and 3 times since May 29th?
