Blue Jays Sign Yeltsin Gudino, Freddy Rodriguez

by Aaron Steen, Jul 2 at 5:25 PM CST

The Blue Jays signed shortstop Yeltsin Gudino and outfielder Freddy Rodriguez out of Venezuela, Sportsnet's Shi Davidi reports via Twitter. Davidi says Gudino will receive a bonus of about $1.2MM, but didn't have a dollar figure for Rodriguez.

Gudino ranked eighth on Baseball America's top 30 international prospects list, while MLB.com ranked him 11th. Though he lacks a true plus tool, Gudino is a smooth fielder at shortstop and has a high baseball IQ, according to BA's Ben Badler. Rodriguez comes in at 18th on Badler's list, and wasn't ranked at all by MLB.com. He's currently a gap hitter with the potential for more power down the line, and is fast enough to play center field at the present, Badler reports.

The first guy sounds like he has no baseball skill.

Sounds about right.

Yeltsin Gudino sounds like a guy who could blossom once he adds lean meat to his body.

At 6ft. and 155lbs, he sure has a lot to build on for a 16 year old.

Freddy Rodriguez has speed and potential power with a good hitting approach, plays CF. Not bad.

Interesting how both guys have really good baseball instincts and IQ. Probably don't want the headache

of having to baby sit these guys in the minors for like 6+ years.

This year I would have traded away most, if not all of the slot money. There's still over a million remaining to deal away and the Cubs are thought to be looking for more to use for international free agents.
