Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 Found this article on ESPN.com regarding the trend towards higher strikeout rates in baseball. Interesting (and slightly disturbing imo) read. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/9404316/mlb-players-striking-record-pace
KSaw Verified Member Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 Pitching has caught up to all the expansion. MLB added the Marlins, Arizona, Colorado and Tampa Bay pretty quickly. Add that to more specialized relievers and better scouting and this is the result. Expand by 2 teams and increase rosters to 26 and the Ks will go down.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 Anyone else catch that every 'K' in the article was capitalized (I think)? Nice little touch.

Fangraphs wrote an article on this topic (After Verducci claimed that Sabermetrics has caused hitter to be too passive) They found that over the past 20 years, hitters are swing at the same number of pitches and are making similar rates of contact, while pitchers are throwing similar (if not less) pitches within the strike zones (computer defined strike zones), but strike outs and called strikes are up. The possible solution they came up with is that the strikes zones are expanding. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-myth-of-the-passive-hitter/

wilko Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 I blame the umps. Bring on the robots!
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 Expansion Locations? Montreal and Vancouver? The possible solution they came up with is that the strikes zones are expanding. If umps would call the zone as it's written in the rules (from below the knees to the letters) it could expand without the ridiculous 6" off the plate strike calls we've seen this season...
Dr Negative Verified Member Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 Maybe google glass can help umpires, because I doubt they are going to get rid of them any time soon.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 Maybe google glass can help umpires, because I doubt they are going to get rid of them any time soon. A friend and I were discussing actual, practical uses for Google Glass last night, and that might be one of the few...
Dr Negative Verified Member Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 Well the most obvious use is to get a reading on another person's power level.

kcjaysfan Verified Member Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 Anyone else catch that every 'K' in the article was capitalized (I think)? Nice little touch. I think it was only in words related to strikeouts. Here are a few instances where it wasn't capitalized: "...and as quickly as a Bryce Harper home run leaves the ballpark..." "...manager Dusty Baker said." "...and Mike Napoli this season." *Edit: And they also didn't alter "striking" in the quote by Joe Maddon.
KSaw Verified Member Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 Expansion Locations? I dunno. Indianapolis, northern New Jersey and Portland would probably top their list. Montreal is a possibility. Moving the Rays probably happens before any expansion though.
