High Strikeout Rates in Baseball

Found this article on ESPN.com regarding the trend towards higher strikeout rates in baseball. Interesting (and slightly disturbing imo) read.

Pitching has caught up to all the expansion. MLB added the Marlins, Arizona, Colorado and Tampa Bay pretty quickly. Add that to more specialized relievers and better scouting and this is the result.

 

Expand by 2 teams and increase rosters to 26 and the Ks will go down.

Fangraphs wrote an article on this topic (After Verducci claimed that Sabermetrics has caused hitter to be too passive)

 

They found that over the past 20 years, hitters are swing at the same number of pitches and are making similar rates of contact, while pitchers are throwing similar (if not less) pitches within the strike zones (computer defined strike zones), but strike outs and called strikes are up.

 

The possible solution they came up with is that the strikes zones are expanding.

If umps would call the zone as it's written in the rules (from below the knees to the letters) it could expand without the ridiculous 6" off the plate strike calls we've seen this season...

I think it was only in words related to strikeouts.

 

Here are a few instances where it wasn't capitalized:

 

"...and as quickly as a Bryce Harper home run leaves the ballpark..."

"...and Mike Napoli this season."

 

*Edit: And they also didn't alter "striking" in the quote by Joe Maddon.

I dunno. Indianapolis, northern New Jersey and Portland would probably top their list. Montreal is a possibility. Moving the Rays probably happens before any expansion though.
