Tuco Verified Member Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 The worst part about Melky is that he looks like a pure DH going forward (even tho he aint have the bat for the position) Some of the routes hes taken and his inability to chase down semi tough balls is bad. His legs look shot.
Tuco Verified Member Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 He looks like he's pushing 40 and not 30. He's overweight, and as you say his legs look done. His 0 WAR is probably generous, amd UZR has him as a touch above average defensively, and there's no way that continues. I loved the signing, but he just isn't good. Ya I was also a fan of the signing but he's been underwhelming. If he continues to hit like this I wonder if we would just be better off with either Gose or Rasmus manning LF?

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 I think we're clearly better right now with Rasmus in LF and Gose in CF, maybe Davis in LF and Rasmus in CF vs. lefties. I just don't see Melky turning this around. Or Sierra/Pillar playing for free lol
Tuco Verified Member Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 I see Hurl mentioning trading Rasmus. What could we really get for him and what teams would be interested? Seattle?
Caper Verified Member Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 I think going forward, Melky is good.
Tuco Verified Member Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 I think going forward, Melky is good. Based on what exactly?
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 I think going forward, Melky is good. Reported Melky can't run, hit for power or catch a ball in the OF.......He only is useful if can hit over .340
TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 I see Hurl mentioning trading Rasmus. What could we really get for him and what teams would be interested? Seattle? probably takes a situation with a season ending injury. I think he brings in a major league ready arm without huge upside. Cinci is always an option as they have injury issues in the OF and Choo is hardly a good CF. He could move to LF and have a very good outfield of Rasmus, Choo and Bruce but they are probably happy enough plus Ludwick is under contract next year. Chances are they wouldn't make the move at this point without an injury. Mets are probably the most interested non contending club. There is a guy who just got called up to Vegas, Rafael Montero who is interesting and probably expendable as they haven't invested that much into him. As much as he's not a huge upside guy if he shows okay in Vegas...it's probably good value (and gives us another Dominican) and we might even be able to get a second player out of them. However, it's not a good optics trade for the Jays. Probably depends on where they sit at the deadline.
The_DH Verified Member Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 Why? At least he's not a pitcher. Their shelf life isn't good.
ace3113 Verified Member Posted June 16, 2013 Author Posted June 16, 2013 I don't know what to think about the team's recent winning ways. As much as I want to see the team to make the playoffs, I hope this doesn't turn out like one of those patented Maple Leafs-like loser rallies that don't allow us to make the playoffs, but just win enough to take us out of prime drafting position in next years deep, but top-heavy draft. Right now I believe we're in the 11th spot, which is good, but the kid I really want us to take (Tyler Kolek) will likely be gone before the top 7. Just watched some footage of him from the Perfect Game National Showcase on Friday. This kid is seriously ridiculous. ^'5 240, with a fastball that sits 93-96 with a peak of 98, flashing a plus slider, and he's still only 17. I'll post a write-up for next years draft once, I watch all the showcase videos.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 I kinda like the idea of getting rid of Melky and signing someone like Granderson for next year. I would also trade Rasmus and put gose in CF. Have an outfield of Granderson, Gose, Bautista.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 There are some other good OF free angents too. Choo, Cruz, Morse, and Pence

I would also trade Rasmus and put gose in CF. Have an outfield of Granderson, Gose, Bautista. Granderson will probably get in the 15M range, and honestly if Melky's legs are back to normal both probably provide similar overall value. I would be in favor of moving Rasmus if it will net us a good young second baseman (or 3rd baseman with Lawrie moving over). Of the other free agents, Choo would be great but will cost a boatload (especially if he maintains the season he's having so far). Boris doesn't help either. I don't think I'd be overly in favor of Morse, Cruz, or Pence.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 re: trading Melky I really like the idea of Rasmus/Gose/Bautista in the OF, although I like the idea of a Melky/Gose/Rasmus with Bautista at 3B and Lawrie at 2B too. If we were dealing Melky I think it'd have to be a nice return. I kind of wonder if we could pull Alfaro from Texas for Melky. That would be incredible. Or maybe Paulino from the Indians or Porcello/Smyly from the Tigers.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 Rasmus to the A's could be a fit A's as usual have plenty of prospects But AA is unlikely to be a seller
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 Rasmus for a nice young pitcher would be great. Dunno where else to put this, but some nice catcher FAs are gonna be available. McCann, Molina, Salty, Pierzynski, Soto, Suzuki, Ruiz. All nice.
Tuco Verified Member Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 McCann or Ruiz would be good Realistically how many teams need a CF'er?

A good fit could be Cincy though. Move Choo to LF. Maybe for Bailey?
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Bailey is a good #2 starter (2.68 FIP, 3.04 xFIP) no way they do that. Maybe for Mike Leake once he cools down. The other teams you mention already have full-time guys they're not giving up on. The Rays could use Rasmus and have a bunch of excess starters. Don't the Rays have Jennings? And I know, I was reaching but no one really needs the dude, we should be trading Melky and not Colby atm. f*** it, the Mariners for Nick Franklin or Brad Miller or someone.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Rays used Jennings in LF mostly, so presumably if they could do that again if the deal was right. But they also have Scott, S-Rod, Joyce, KJ and now Myers floating around so they don't really need Rasmus. I have it: Padres. They're right in the NL West race. Maybin is hurt and maybe not the long-term answer. Try to get Austin Hedges or Matt Wisler. Holy s***, Padres for Austin Hedges would be ermahgerd. I would die. I have some sweet footage of Aaron Sanchez vs Austin Hedges I took last year. Behind the plate in Lansing. I could TRY and find it wherever the f*** it was. Padres: Colby for Hedges Mariners: Colby for *insert elite MIF prospect here*

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Salvador Perez could end up in the upper tier before long...
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Get 'er done AA! Hedges is somewhat expendable for the Padres and is everything we need. And he has The Good Face. I'd be really surprised but thrilled if they did that.

Otherwise, if we trade Colby it has to be for someone who is mlb ready.

If Gose can provide 3/4 of the value Rasmus can, which he should be able to, then you do this. Long term success. f*** JPA.

It would be idiotic to take any step backward when we're trying to contend. I should have qualified that if we are definitely out of it at the deadline, THEN it might be worth some consideration. Otherwise we need to get something back that is mlb ready and at a position of need.

Who knows? Gose may provide a lot of value with just defense and baserunning.
