fireballW Verified Member Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 Thole caught Dickey during a year where Dickey won the Cy Young, so how is he not qualified to catch him this year? I'm happy we have Dickey, but he is pitching like shiat. Blanco is an offensive black hole, whilst Thole is really not. The guy can at least walk and slap the ball around for a decent average. Especially once our players get back (Reyes, lawrie - if they ever get back) I want to Thole catching. The lineup below is still a super good lineup, even if we never have our pitchers healthy enough to make us any good. Reyes Melky Bautista Edwin Lind * Lawrie Rasmus Bonifacio Thole

admin Site Manager Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 But Dickey would complain if he didn't have Blanco! The Jays never want to upset any of their players. And AA made a promise to Blanco that can never be broken! My only assumption would be that Dickey is demanding Blanco be his catcher. Why though? I don't know. He had his best year last year. Thole is hitting .326/.397/.512 in AAA. Might as well try it out, can't be any worse.
Arkadium Verified Member Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 In 2011 Blanco slugged .540... more than 100 pts higher than any other point in his 15 yr career... that's the type of gamble our GM likes to take.
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 As much as I want to say the Blanco experiment is a failure, I don't think Thole will be up anytime at all. He's having a pretty good year thus far as a starter. I'd like to see him up because of the chemistry he and RA have. I might be giving AA more credit here than he might deserve, but maybe having him as a starter might make him more value in the event the Jays are looking to make a move as the deadline approaches. Someone might be willing to give Thole a starting gig or someone might get hurt and he'll be available to bring something in, especially to a contending team that might get desperate. Maybe he'll really shock everyone and deal JPA for a starter than promote Thole. I'd love to give Thole a chance but having him as RA's personal catcher and not more might only bring us back to where we are now, maybe a little more production. Then again anything more than what Blanco is doing now would help especially when the "Ace" is giving up so many runs this year.

Letting J.P hit 30 dingers and trading him for something good is my hope, can't see Thole being very valuable after his last couple seasons.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 If Thole was everyday C, people would tire on his .066 ISO bat in a short period of time. Grass is just always greener on the other side. But back to the OP, Thole > Blanco so I dont understand that part.
Respectimo Verified Member Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 What is wrong with people. A backup catcher, catching once every 5 days is certainly not the problem with the Blue Jays. Dickey pitching like crap. Other starters forgetting how to pitch and injuries are the real problem here. Blanco is last on the list of problems.

bzapple Verified Member Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 You know, normally when a guy has a .214 wOBA I would automatically assume it's just a SSS fluke and there's regression coming...but I think Blanco could actually keep this pace all season.

A .240 BABIP seems a bit high for someone who runs at the speed of a dying walrus, so it's possible he may get even worse.

dineke Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 The black hole is awesome. Much tighter.
