TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Maybe we could somehow steer this thread back to Keith Law's list and resume the DDL discussion in the DDL thread. Fine stiffle the conversation right when I decide to get involved.
Laika Community Moderator Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Keith is dumb for ranking Sanchez that high. How the f*** is an arm in A+ with his peripherals supposed to be the 13th best prospect in baseball? It's borderline ludicrous.

He's been a Law guy all the way up the ladder and Law is doubling down yet again.

I'm surprised that the top 5 didn't end up being Wheeler, Sanchez, Kolten Wong, Kyle Gibson and Luis Heredia. And I certainly would have had Mike Montgomery on "others to consider." How did I do?

TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Gary Sanchez too. K-Rates going down, BB going up but it's still only 200 PA's repeating the level. So much overall to like but to hype him as an MVP if he sticks at Catcher is a little overblown. Sounds like me with TdA.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Well, at least KL still believes in Zunino. Another HR tonight, no strikeouts. He might be getting better. Age vs. level is still very good. I guess even if he's just a slightly better version of JPA, that's not the worst thing ever in a dynasty league. I make fun of the almost a month without a walk for Zunino but he also had 10 in his first 18 games and a 12% rate last year. I think he just decided to get in Eric Wedge mode a little too early.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Speaking on TDA, it's a real statement that Law didn't include him. I've heard that a bunch of scouts are souring on TDA a bit, most uber-prospects have already established themselves by 24. I still believe in him. He needs a run of good health. I can see how Law would drop him more than 12 spots though.
Laika Community Moderator Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Yep, I still like him, but if he's not an elite prospect anymore we can feel a bit better about the Dickey trade. Nah, not really. The only needle that moves on Travis is his debut. Broken toe does not = prospect status tumble. I still don't necessarily buy that he's "injury prone". A lot of his stuff was just fluke s***. Being said, his profile was never that of an elite prospect anyway. I wouldn't really expect much more than a .260/.315/.410 career line. Something like that.

Laika Community Moderator Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Good point. I do agree that he was never that great a prospect - if Dickey works out there's not much of a chance that D'Arnaud makes us deeply regret it. I do believe he's "injury-prone", some people do have brittler bones than others or expose themselves to injuries more when playing. Both teams can certainly still win or lose the trade, little has been decided. Nah, the Blue Jays lost. It has almost nothing to do with Dickey though, and almost everything to do with the terribleness of John Paul Arencibia. In the everlasting words of some poster whose name I can't remember, "As long as the current regime believes in Arencibia, I don't believe in the current regime".
Laika Community Moderator Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 I see him being much more Miguel Montero with the bat rather than sub Lucroy. MigMon would be a near ceiling for TDA. Like, a 90th percentile projection. I think Montero's career MLB K/BB is substantially better than d'Arnaud's career minor league figure (might be wrong).

z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 With Wheeler and Sanchez, I'm one of three DDLers (havok22, speedygose) with two prospects on this list! Sanchez is going to look great with Lee and Hamels mentoring him in Philly. You missed quite a few people. I've got Oscar and Gregory Polanco... not to mention Bundy on my MLB roster.

I know, took too quick of a scan. A lot of people have decent farms, will be really interesting to see how that changes over the years. I know very well to Gregory Polanco, he was a horrible player and then .................Vladimir Guerrero + Speed

In the everlasting words of some poster whose name I can't remember, "As long as the current regime believes in Arencibia, I don't believe in the current regime". Well they got Thole back in the trade so it's not like the trade forced them to commit to JPA. In fact, swapping out Thole for TDA improved the depth chart. The swap of catchers definitely didn't lose the trade for the Jays. The greater concern is that Dickey has looked awful and Syndergaard hasn't lost a beat. He is looking like he has a very real chance of becoming the first traded prospect to really haunt AA.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 5, 2013 Posted June 5, 2013 In fact, swapping out Thole for TDA improved the depth chart. If we're discounting injuries (he'll be back soon apparently) then I disagree.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted June 5, 2013 Posted June 5, 2013 If we're discounting injuries (he'll be back soon apparently) then I disagree. Long term TDA is the better asset but for 2013, Thole was a more viable alternative to JPA (not that the Jays went that way but they certainly could have).

Probably slightly more viable but I think TDA could very well provide value this year. And TDA >>> Thole in the next 3 years (most likely). 3 year window or whatever ********.

And TDA >>> Thole in the next 3 years (most likely). 3 year window or whatever ********. The think with TDA is that he could end up massively more valuable than Thole but it's also possible (and arguably just as likely) that he can't stay on the field long enough to even provide the value of a low end starting catcher.

Syndergaard being good, I still wouldn't label as a "great concern". An arm is an arm is an arm, and an arm in A ball would be hard pressed by statistical likelihood to ever topple the balance of a trade for an MLB pitcher that was as dominant as Dickey in 2012. But when JPA is your starting C in front of arguably the best catching prospect in the game, and you choose to trade said prospect for a 38 year old pitcher, well... that is and likely always will be the gist of the swap. Getting Thole is certainly a point, but it's a small factor when viewing the thing in totality. There's no need for us to be so myopic, just because Toronto was.

Thole has posted a negative WAR the last two seasons, TDA is probably more valuable already. Why we traded for Thole to play in triple A all year makes no sense - we essentially traded Syndergaard for a AAA catcher.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 5, 2013 Posted June 5, 2013 Thole has posted a negative WAR the last two seasons Why do you say this? It isn't true.
IronLadle Verified Member Posted June 5, 2013 Posted June 5, 2013 Why do you say this? It isn't true. You're right my bad he was -.01 last year and .07 in the year before after being 1.5 his first year. He's gotten worse ever year.

He was concussed last year. Plus, I'd think most of the difference between the 1.5 and .07 is sketchy defensive metrics as his offense was pretty damn good for a catcher both those years. Not to mention he has had to catch Dickey for most of his career.
