GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 After the Marlins trade we were pretty deep at catcher. Arenciba, Buck, d'Arnaud, Gomes, and Jiminez when healthy. Now we have Arencibia, Thole, and Nickeas, and Jiminez if he ever stays healthy. Gomes was traded November 3rd, 2012 http://www.thestar.com/sports/baseball/2012/11/03/mlb_blue_jays_trade_mike_aviles_yan_gomes_to_indians_for_esmil_rogers.html Marlins trade was rumored on November 14th, 2012 http://www.tsn.ca/mlb/story/?id=409433
TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 The Indians should be selling high was my thought. A further slap in the face when they turn Gomes into a season of Headley and then sign one of the FA catchers that the fans here are fappin' to
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 Here is the question...if Yan Gomes came available for next year at the price of a 3 WAR player, would you make the move to acquire him? How old is the player?? What is their contract and Salary?? What is their 3 year record (including minor league performance), 5 year, 10 year (if it goes back that far)?? What do the "compatent" scouts say about the player in the context of the WAR?? Is their any reason why the WAR could be wrong?? For example is Gomes really worth 3.5 wins in half a season or is it a quirk of the formula?? Ideally I would have access to scouts, young, intelligent and modern enought to help look at the WAR numbers and give insight to why they could be off. Is the 3 WAR player going the other way Brett Lawrie (3 year average of about 3 WAR) or Melky Cabrerra type (also a 3 year average of 3 WAR)?? I think the answer is NO. It is hard to find a 3 WAR player that I'd trade for him. Unless you consider Melky 3 WAR (3 year average) or it's another player that came out of no where.

A further slap in the face when they turn Gomes into a season of Headley and then sign one of the FA catchers that the fans here are fappin' to If Rogers is a reasonable fourth or fifth starter in 2014 at a presumably modest salary, the trade will look very good for the Jays unless Gomes becomes a better then average starting catcher. Given the Jays need for reliable starting pitching, I can't see this trade as being "won" yet at all. Both teams got something they need so I can't see this trade as being bad for anyone. The fact Rogers added a pitch, has good velocity, durability, and pitched in Colorado before ( where he had bad stats ), it is not inconceivable he could be a lot better then his history suggests. It's happened before to similar guys. Even as a reliever, he's one of few guys who truly can be long relief ( eg Rogers, Happ, Lincoln ), even though Gibbons rarely considers this an option for some strange reason unless they are 10 runs behind. Age 27, a little younger then Josh Johnson, so I don't think that's an issue at this point.

We have a winner ! And here... Gomes was viewed as pure garbage by the hive... Immediately laughed off anyone that thought he had potential.
