Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 I'd bet AA has more than 1 of those promises on the field. add to your list: Boni, Buehrle as starter and Rasmus

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 5'10", you're a giant! lol I was always the smallest guy on the field, now I'd be the widest. I'm more of a single malt kind of guy. I like my single malt as well, but it was a reference to this: “The only thing I hope the fans do is just enjoy it and shout, even bad things,” [Kawasaki] said. “Just release their stress, just drink beer and watch the games. If I was a baseball fan I would just drink beers and shout during the game.”

oakville69 Verified Member Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 I just can't see a situation where Henry f***ing Blanco was like "I'll only sign with you (remember, I'm 800 years old and haven't ever been a good hitter!) if you promise that under no circumstances will you take me off the MLB roster" and AA (or ANY GM) was like "DEAL!" I agree with you but I distinctly recall that the fans were demanding that JPA get more playing time in 2010. Cito said that he wanted to ensure that John Buck get 20 HR's in 2010 so he could get a good contract in 2011 to feed his family. The fans jumped all over Cito for playing the "veterin" John Buck . After the season ended, AA admitted that he had promised John Buck regular playing time , so it wasn't Cito's fault but AA that made the commitment to Buck when he signed him as a free agent for 2010. Did AA make a promise to Blanco or Dickey that Blanco would be his regular catcher in 20103 to get Dickey to sign an extension? You have to remember that the Jays have had a hard time getting free agents to sign here. Perhaps AA has to make all sorts of accomodations to Dickey or Blanco to get them to play in Toronto.

I would have been perfectly fine with saying "No thanks" if that was Dickey's demand. I hated that trade from day one, and I'd have loved ANY excuse to get out of it.
oakville69 Verified Member Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 AA must have believed that getting Dickey from the Mets, who have financial issues, with 1 year already signed for 2013 at $5 million , was a good deal. Dickey was a good upgrade on paper over Alvarez or Carlos Villenueva.

oakville69 Verified Member Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 The salary isn't the issue for me, the d'Arnauld + Syndergaard was... OK, but Syndergaard is 2 years away from the MLB. D'Arnaud could have played for the Jays in 2013, if he wasn't hurt.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 OK, but Syndergaard is 2 years away from the MLB. D'Arnaud could have played for the Jays in 2013, if he wasn't hurt. Okay, and Dickey was 38 (39?) at the time of the deal and only had 1 year guaranteed on his contract. That was too much to pay in that situation.

ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 Wasn't the deal conditional on an extension, though? This is true and I was against giving up what they gave up. It just seemed AA didn't put up much of an argument to Alderson and negotiate much. He just accepted that Alderson wanted those 2 and gave in. I wouldn't have made the deal anyway. The same thing seemed to happen with the Florida trade, he didn't get a discount for Buehrle's contract although he did get 8M back, but then again, John Buck = 5M (?). Anyways...
