DustyBaker Verified Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 I know this forum has been on board with this for a while now, but its slowly starting to creep more into the mainstream (if you consider Grantland mainstream). While this article references a lot of information one would already know through baseball-prospectus or fangraphs, I found it interesting how invested specifically the Yankees were in this concept. Makes you wonder if our FO gives a s*** about any of this.... and if thats trickling down to JP. It talks about Russel Martin and Cervelli being students of this idea, and actively trying to improve themselves (and that it is easier to improve the basics of this skill, then say, hitting dingers) whereas I really can't picture JP putting hours (or minutes) into this. Its a little frustrating reading about other teams trying to be on the cutting edge to gain a competitive advantage,.... and were throwing out JP day after day. Then again, chicks dig the long ball, so I guess hes got that going for him. Anyways, just thought I'd share. http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/9275754/studying-art-pitch-framing-catchers-such-francisco-cervelli-chris-stewart-jose-molina-others

GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Probably my favourite post of yours ever. Is that really saying much?
GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Great article, though, really interesting read. Apparently Greg Zaun was a great framer, according to Fast. Ryan Hanigan would be a great pick up for this team.
torontofan Verified Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Someone should tweet this article to JPA haha.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 I thought thehurl posted that JPA is in the middle of the pack this year?..
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Great article. Unfortunately, this team watching Molina leave for peanuts, ignoring Russell Martin amid a giant spending spree, and pledging undying allegiance to JPA is pretty strong evidence that they don't give a single f*** about pitch framing. They don't care about pitch framing, getting on base, stats, or milking value. Man, what would a guy like Andrew Friedman accomplish with this payroll? It makes my mouth water to think about it. 120 win team with a top 5 farm.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 For whatever it's worth, aren't the Blue Jays 4th best in expected/actual strikes or something?
GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 Does anyone know of or have framing numbers for Jimenez? Who, A.J. Jimenez?
Laika Community Moderator Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 (edited) Oui. There are no publicly available framing numbers for minor leaguers. Most methods use pitchFX. But Max Marchi alludes to its possibility in his piece that dropped on BP today. I think it's free, you'll like it. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=20596. GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 Like NJH said, no specific numbers, but most reports had him listed as the #1 defensive catcher in the system over d'Arnaud, which I can agree with. The kid's defense is a strong point.
