No thats fair. Not all umps are bad. Just sucks seeing perfect games blown, game tying homeruns missed, constant strikes called when balls or vice versa. It really gets old. They need younger umps who can actually see lol

When Angel Hernandez is the crew chief there's bound to be problems.

Kirk, who makes the final call on a HR review? Is it a collaboration of umps, the HP ump, the crew chief?

Why does Angel Hendandez still have his job?

Union is the first answer. And the second is, that if every employer fired people for making mistakes no one would be employed.

I'm no Kirk, but MLB Network implied that the crew chief makes the final call. The big controversy was Angel Hernandez is the same person who had a heated argument with Melvin and tossed him for a bad call. Hernandez is the crew chief and some people think that he made that final decision just to piss Melvin off

Crew chief. They all review and discuss but in the end...

Still though, this is inexcusable. Mistakes are understandable, but the integrity of the game is worsened by such horrible calls. This umpire should be suspended, this is ridiculous.

I don't know who thinks Angel blew it on purpose to stick it to Melvin. That wouldn't happen. The embarrassment over blowing a call like that and the fine and yes, there will be an undisclosed fine from Charlie Reilford. And then the shadow over his integrity on the field. He didnt blow it on purpose. He's just bad.

We obviously don't know what exactly happened when they were reviewing it, but what are your thoughts on assigning blame in these two possible scenarios? 1) All three umpires missed the ball hitting the railing in the replay. Should all three umpires be at fault, or just the crew chief? 2) One or two of the other umpires saw it correctly in the replay, then Hernandez overruled them. Same question.

Edit: nevermind i read the question wrong

You can designate authority but not responsibility. Hernandez should rightly take the heat here.

Awful, awful call.

I think that as a whole, MLB's umpiring could be improved with the firing of about 10 guys. It seems like the same guys blowing calls over and over. On the flip side, there is probably 10 or so exceptionally good umpires in MLB. The rest are just meh.

I don't know how much it would cost if the league had to buy these guys out, but it would be money well spent. Earlier this season the Jays had a game with a 27 year old plate umpire. I don't remember his name, but he was very good for the 7 or so innings I watched, so the talent is out there to improve the crews.

Yeah I'm sure you'll be toting that same line when we have replacement umpires.

Sucks guys like Maddon and Melvin getting ejected for complaining about a call when they were obviously right

Who's talking about replacement umpires, it's about getting rid of the Angel Hernandez's, CB Bucknors and Bob Davidsons of the league. You know, promoting talented umpires and getting rid of the crap.

I presume these umpires have a strong union that makes firing experienced but bad ones almost impossible???

How do you know he made that decision to piss Melvin off. Credible source or 15 year old mind imagining things?

Jon Morosi ‏@jonmorosi Angel Hernandez, one of the worst umpires in MLB, wasn’t the most deserving candidate for the temporary promotion to chief.

If 1 call is the difference in a ballgame you deserve to lose!

Doesnt work that way, what if ta bad call happens with 2 outs in the ninth?
