Difference is Sanchez never had control while Norris put up below average walk rates but not completely awful.

Javier Camps (Blue Jays player development intern) tweeted out that newly drafted players and undrafted players who have agreements with the Blue Jays are getting physicals this morning, so could expect to hear some kind of an announcement regarding signings (official from the team) later today or tomorrow.

Extended spring training stats

 

Extended spring training is finished for 2015 and I have a copy of the final stats. Lets see who and what stands out.

 

Hitters

Who hit over .300? Three hitters had a .300 average.

The leading hitter was Deiferson Barreto who hit .386 in 101 at-bats. Barreto has been in the Jays system for a few years and hit well in the GCL last season. Barreto just turned 20. His OPS was 446 and his slugging was 465. Barreto had just 7 strikeouts and 7 walks so he seems like a free swinger.

Yeltsin Gudino hit .330. Gudino was a big signing out of Venezuela back in 2013. Gudino struggled in the GCL last season, he was young but scouts also thought he needed to add most muscle. The .330 average is a good sign, Gudino had one home run and six doubles out of his 36 hits. Gudino struck out 17 times in 109 at-bats and walked eleven times, both reasonable. Will those numbers get Gudino an assignment to Bluefield?

The third 300 hitter was Freddy Rodriguez who hit .304 in 102 at-bats. Rodriguez, like Gudino, is an 18 year old signee from Venezuela. Rodriguez is just two months older than Gudino. Unlike Gudino, Rodriguez had a bit more pop with four home runs and 5 doubles. He is also more of a free swinger with just 4 walks and 15 K's.

 

How many hitters have an OPS over 800? Answer, five.

Barreto (912) and Rodriguez (807) are both over 800. Gudino just missed at 798. Second higest OPS was Lane Thomas at 839. Thomas just hit .256 in 78 at-bats. The 78 ab's suggest he might have had an injury for a short while. Thomas' OPS was helped by 11 extra base hits, 4 doubles, 5 triples and 2 home runs. Thomas had 9 walks and 24 K's.

Also at 839 OPS was Rolando Segovia, another Venezuelan, but he is 20 years old. Segovia hit .268 with four more walks than Thomas but with fewer extra base hits, seven.

The final hitter with an OPS over 800 was Juan Kelly at 803. Kelly had 140 at-bats, the most of any hitter. Kelly hit .279 and his differentiator was 12 doubles.

 

Who didn't hit?

The following hitters hit .220 or less: Miguel Almonte; Dean Bell; Edwin Fuentes; Sean Hurley; Bryan Lizardo; James Lynch; Alexis Moldonado; Matt Morgan; Edward Olivares; Rodrigo Orozco; Juan Tejada and Brett Wellman.Matt Morgan was a fourth round pick of the Jays in 2014. He struggled during the season after he was drafted but the front office claimed he had figured things out in the instructional league. This year Morgan hit .195 with a huge 38 K's in 82 at bats.

 

The only other hitter to note is Jacob Anderson. Anderson just had 43 AB's and hit .233 with an OPS of .769. It will be interesting to see where he is assigned.

 

Pitchers

Who has the lowest WHIP with at least 10 innings pitched?

The lowest WHIP belongs to Adonys Cardona at 0.5. However Cardona only pitched 10 innings as he comes back from injury. The lowest among pitchers who worked more was Grayson Huffman with an 0.85 WHIP. Huffman only gave up 13 hits in 26 innings, continuing a trend from last year. Huffman walked 9 and had 21 K's. Three other pitchers were under one, Alberto Guzman at 0.89, Joey Aquino at 0.93 (just 14 innings), and Conor Fisk at 0.95.

 

Who made the most starts?

In the minor leagues the Jays allocate starts to their most promising pitchers. In extended the most starts were made by Evan Smith and Nick Wells with 8 each. Clinton Hollon made 7, and Angel Perdomo, Juliandry Higuera and Jacob Brentz made 5 each.

 

Who has a lot more strikeouts than innings pitched?

Only three pitchers do, Clinton Hollon, Joey Aquino and Francisco Rios. A few pitchers were close, Alberto Guzman, Juliandry Higuera, Brandon Hinkle, Angel Perdomo and Zak Wasilewski.

 

Who has more than three times as many K's as walks?

Jon Wandling (24-5); Juliandry Higuera (26-6); Alberto Guzman (17-4); Joey Aquino (15-4); Conor Fisk (18-5); and Clinton Hollon (20-6).

 

Who has trouble throwing strikes?

The following pitchers had more walks than K's: Jacob Brentz (coming back from surgery); Osman Gutierrez; Kelyn Jose; Hansel Rodriguez and Jonathan Torres. Joe Claver, Dennis Diaz and Daniel Lietz were close.

 

Anything else of note?

Jacob Brentz was wild this spring and it is unclear what impact his off-season surgery had on him. Clinton Hollon looks to be on track as he comes back from TJ surgery. It will be interesting to see where Grayson Huffman is assigned. He has shown an ability to generate weak contact without huge strikeout numbers, will that get him a ticket to Vancouver?Tom Robson has pitched three innings, he might still be a few weeks away from a full assignment. None of Evan Smith, Dan Lietz or Angel Perdomo had outstanding extended numbers. Can they find form in their upcoming short seasons? Zak Wasilewski pitched exclusively out of the bullpen in extended. Nick Wells had a decent extended with better strikeout rates than last season. The Jays spent $330,000 on Hansel Rodriguez last year, his command is still a work in process. Juan Meza a big dollar signing from last year pitched 8 innings with a 10.8 ERA.
