6. Mitch Nay, 3b, Blue Jays

Mitch Nay

Team: low Class A Lansing (Midwest)

Age: 20

Why He’s Here: .429/.448/.714 (12-for-28), 4 R, 5 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 7 SO, 1-for-1 SB

The Scoop: Nay’s home run this week was his first since May 12, which is a pretty lengthy gap for a hitter who came out of high school with above-average raw power. But Nay is an example of a young hitter for which home run totals don’t tell the whole story. The 20-year-old is second in the Midwest League with 30 doubles, and while two-baggers don’t always turn into home runs as a hitter matures, they often do. That’s the best-case for scenario Nay, who has just three home runs this year at a power-oriented position.

11. Rowdy Tellez, 1b, Blue Jays

Rowdy Tellez

Team: Rookie-level Bluefield (Appalachian)

Age: 19

Why He’s Here: .550/.577/1.000 (11-for-20), 7 R, 3 2B, 2 HR, 9 RBIs, 4 BB, 3 SO

The Scoop: Tellez passed on a Southern California commitment when the Blue Jays offered him $850,000—second-round money—as a 30th-round pick. He ranked among the best lefthanded power bats available in 2013. He’s a big guy (6-foot-4, 220 pounds) who will have to focus on conditioning, but he has above-average bat speed and can drive the ball to the opposite field. That’s good because Tellez’s bat must carry him.

Andy Burns, 3b, Blue Jays: At Double-A New Hampshire, Burns hit .419 (13-for-31) this week with a home run, a triple, a double and a stolen base. He has long been viewed as a good defensive prospect, with the ability to play multiple positions in the infield and outfield, and with the flashes he’s shown at the plate he could be a contributor in Toronto one day soon.

Just another misdiagnosis of an injury, the news here is that this problem extends to the minors as well so we can't blame the Canadian health care system...

I am on board with him being here in Septamber. He needs to be added to 40 man this winter anyways and can help us win, in whatever role necessary.

Never a bad thing to have a CF who can play plus D and be a pinch runner. That said I don't bring him up if he is not for sure 100%. Theres been enough BS with injuries on this team already.

Pompey is a SMART Canadian boy, he would tell the trainers if he was feeling a little tightness in his lower abs to make sure he has a long successful career.

He's rule 5 eligible? In that case it probably can't hurt. Although I dunno how much he can help us win in much more than a defensive replacement / PR role, I don't think the bat is ready yet. It will be though.

Yep, rule 5.

So is Burns, isn't he? I would've already promoted Burns to Buffalo given his hot 2nd half, but that's just me.

One on my DDL draft watch list Tyler Danish (ChiSox prospect) has a no-no through 6 in the Carolina league. Facing former Jays farmhand Kevin Ahrens next inning.

Marc chose a couple really good sleepers as well as hitting that Pompey would progress the most.

BB: Coming into next season, who are two sleeper prospects in the system that no one is talking about?

MH: I’ll go with two pitchers. Miguel Castro destroyed the Dominican Summer League last summer to earn a late-season trip to North America. The second is Ryan Borucki. I had a talent evaluator say some really good things about him right before he got hurt and required Tommy John surgery, causing him to miss all of 2013. Both pitchers should open the year in extended spring training.

BB: Who do you see rising up the system in 2014?

MH: People are starting to talk about Dalton Pompey and I think that will continue in 2014 as the Canadian continues to put all his tools together. Ryan Tepera is a guy that I could see moving quickly now that he’s in the bullpen. If he’s not popped in the Rule Five draft I could see him reaching Toronto in the second half of 2014.

Man. I still think Pillar can play in this league. He's been sooo good in AAA this year.

Anxiety and behavioral issues.

He really should be up in September but...
