My impression is that he has no interest in handling anything day to day and mostly just wants input on the team direction in general. He never said anything to the effect of "The team is now yours." I've also sent him a co manager invite

He was pretty unambiguous. He wanted you to be the only owner, and him to be removed completely. He removed you as co-owner so I could replace him with you.
