Is Matt Manning such a AAAA guy that he can strike guys out in AAA all day, but can't ever produce decent K numbers in the show... Looking more likely by the minute.

He wasn’t awful the first start.

Also don’t exactly see guys like Nimmo, Lindor, Alonso in triple-A.

 

Manning’s stuff+ actually looks decent, all three pitches graded average or better in 2023. Most notably the slider was well above average. The 7.9% SwStr% seems to be the issue.

He gave up way too many fly balls and hard contact, bottom 9% percentile in giving up barrels isn’t a good recipe. Fly balls + hard contact + low swinging strikes.

 

I don’t watch him enough to pinpoint the issues, but possibly needs better command as pitches getting too much plate, or there’s not enough separation between his pitches to induce swinging strikes.

 

You can kinda get away with it in triple-A but not the big leagues.

He very well might be. But I pretty much had no choice when the idea of getting Acuna came up. Gotta shoot for the big get's when you have the chance.

Unfortunately, I consider Acuna to have a similar risk profile to someone like Skenes at this point. Right ACL in 2021, then tweaked that knee again in ST and never looked quite right, then tore the left ACL. He might be permanently compromised. Or maybe AA shows some balls, bans him from playing winter league, and he's the top fantasy player in the league again.

 

I might have had tunnel vision with Skenes, but I think he's a top-5 dynasty pitcher, and I don't see why he can't have a Strasburg/Wheeler career. He checks basically every box that can be checked for me.

Honestly I don’t think this is impacting the wear and tear all that much, players like RAJ aren’t treating these games with the same intensity, it’s just additional practice. Unfortunately Acuña is built different, and not in a good way. He clearly had bad knees if this is already such a major issue this early in his career.

I've seen all of 35 innings of him. But the only active pitcher who I think is as impressive is DeGrom. The stuff is one thing, but Skenes commands 100 on the black basically every game, and most games commands the 95 mph splinker. And also has a plus slider. It's outrageous. If he can get through the next 20 years with only 1-2 catastrophic injuries he's going to have an insane career.

I think because his fastball shape isn't amazing, a lot will depend on how his velo holds up over time.

Strider is pretty boring. Two great pitches but it's like watching a closer throw bulk innings.
