I'm not happy with the precedents anymore and honestly wish we never started.

I know it began with Oscar Taveras and Jose Fernandez, who were more catastrophic losses. Not sure why I/we felt the need to compensate for the lesser guys.

It's just so much simpler going forward to not do it at all. Tough luck to the owner whether it's death, retirement, injury, or the law.

The vote is 6-4 right now so it could go either way.

6-5 now, but since Spanky just spoiled his ballot, it's 5-5

If the league votes to keep compensation, perhaps a follow-up poll would be in order that asks the question of whether or not compensation should be awarded on a case-by-case basis. Losing someone like a Tyler Skaggs or Yordano Ventura in a 20-team league is pretty easily overcome. A Jose Fernandez, though, is almost certainly your best pitcher and should probably garner sudden loss compensation, imo.

I realize this opens up a can of worms if a borderline star dies, but it might be best to police on a per-case basis if we vote to keep sudden loss compensation.

Nah, way too arbitrariness. What is meant by 'sudden loss'? How about arrest and conviction on a murder charge?

I think your player dying is different than your player being Felipe Vasquez. Yes their careers end just as abruptly, but I do feel there's a distinction. While in real life teams aren't compensated for losing a single player to sudden unexpected death, they are in more extreme circumstances. This isn't the LOD, we don't necessarily need to follow real life as much, I think compensating an owner for the loss of a star is fair within the competitive nature of the league, obviously others will disagree.

Would a current player who is diagnosed with ALS even stop playing right away? Has that happened recently?

That's beside the point. The arbitrariness of what constitutes "sudden loss" and the level of compensation if any is given can be contentious and bad for the league.

Right. No matter the system there is an arbitrary line somewhere. That’s what I dislike

How is that different? I'm not concerned with morality here. I think everyone know Vazquez was a bit of a weirdo, but a pedophile? He's never going to play baseball again. He's a reliever so it isn't devastating perhaps, but it's a bigger loss than Ventura and Skaggs.

So the way I see it:

Vazquez career over due to a massive crime = no compensation

Vazquez career over due to dying before that stuff is uncovered = compensation

What if right now Vazquez killed himself? Would his owner be compensated? Is is especially dubious because:

- Oscar Taveras died while commiting a crime

- Jose Fernandez died possibly while committing a crime (unclear)

- Yordano Ventura died while committing a crime

- Tyler Skaggs likely died while committing a crime.

If a player went Chris Benoit on his family and himself, is that worthy of compensation?

We've had 4 of these already so I don't think it's quite trivial. I won't die on this hill, but I didn't push to be compensated for Taveras. I didn't feel like I should have been compensated and looking back, I should have refused. I'm willing to pay the league compensation for that mistake because the Taveras death got this whole thing rolling.

Looking to acquire an OF or SP if anyone has one available. Open to bigger deals, most players are on the table (probably not Gallo, Hiura or Flaherty though)

Does anyone want Luiz Gohara? I'd like to keep Luzardo down in the minors for the cuts but I was forced to pseudo-promote him since when I traded for Ethan Hankins my farm was technically full.

If compensation is going to bring up stupid conversations about morals I'd like to say we have to keep it. Cause Boxy going off on a rant about dead people entertains me.

I have zero say in the integrity of this league as I ditched my team in order to participate in a dispersal draft in order to get my first playoff appearance. So if you want to change my vote to "I don't care" or I'll change it to "I vote no compensation if JimCanuck would just shut the f*** up about it".

Welcome back Speedy!

As a mod you should be encouraging forum participation, not discouraging it.

Also, a vague reference to 'morals' does not contribute to the discussion. Be better!

Strongly against compensating player deaths. My vote would zero compensation regardless of how good the player is.

If you have a player who has shockingly unexpected death, it's bad luck. The same way a player could have a freak injury which renders him worthless from that point forward. It opens too many cans of worms trying to decide which are worth of compensation when nothing is given to compensate injuries.

Vote is now 9-6 in favour of getting rid of all sudden loss compensation.

Anyone having any issues from desktop where your team is still stuck in 2019? On mobile it shows my current roster in Period '1 (Thu Mar 26)'. However, on desktop it shows '2019 Regular Season Period (186)'. I'm unable to see any offseason changes from desktop, and I'm assuming I'm overlooking something

There are different pages for different seasons. You should see the 2020 season under your leagues.

In Fantrax each season gets a new league. If you go to the dropdown you should be able to switch from DDL 2019 to the DDL 2020, under "My Leagues". You're looking at the 2019 version of the league (I set it up as a 2019 league due to stupid timing).

On desktop, click the My Leagues drop-down menu and select the 2020 DDL season (if you haven't).

I'm looking to move two or three of the following guys for a keeper upgrade:

Aaron Civale

Garrett Richards

Chris Martin (65:5 K:BB ratio)

Mike Tauchman

Jordan Loplow

Aristides Aquino

Basically free:

Phillip Ervin

John Brebbia

Andrew Kittredge

Joe Kelly

C.J. Cron

I will also consider pick upgrades and prospects (I have room for 3 on my farm).

Updated.

I'd like to make a move along the lines of Civale/Richards + Aquino/Luplow/Tauchman for a 2B or OF upgrade.

I am not in your league, but Tauchman is a beast... I wouldn't give him away lightly.. he can play all three OF and will get regular playing time this year.
