Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 So I think the Otani thing can be worked around (best as we can) with the following; 1- Otani only 1 player for all cut-down purposes 2- The owner only has to keep one copy of Otani on his roster at any time to retain ownership It sucks a bit for the owner as he needs to use two roster spots for the player, but it looks like the best we can do at this point. Giving the owner flexibility to drop Otani the hitter or Otani the pitcher (but not both) at any time should do something to make up for this. As does allowing the owner to collect hitting stats even when Otani is pitching. All other owners, just don't pick up anyone named Otani. In the hypothetical instance that Otani's owner is going to drop both copies in the future, the gentlemanly thing to do would be to announce it so people can make a claim (and not have to notice that both are FA's before deciding if they want to make a claim). Its one player, I'm sure we can handle it. Thoughts? I don't like it. He should have to carry both, and if the hitter isn't rosterable, that's Hurl's dilemma. If anything maybe they both count as 1 keeper in the offseason, but I really don't care to see Ohtani on waivers every week and have to sort through that mess.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 16, 2017 Author Posted December 16, 2017 I think the easiest thing might be to just split Ohtani into two assets.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 I guess I come at it from the approach that we are trying to approximate the real Otani for fantasy purposes. Part of his real life appeal is that he might be able to be a two way guy. That is not how he is being treated by Yahoo in fantasy, which I think is a shame. Treating him as two assets is the easiest thing to do, but I'm not that interested in how easy it is. I'm more interested in what is most in line with the spirit of what fantasy baseball tries to be.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 I'm good with whatever the majority of NJH's agrees upon. My personal thought is Cutdown he's 1 of 20. For roster...he's 2.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 Splitting him into two assets, but if you own both then he only counts as one player for cutdown purposes makes some sense imo. The drawback could be if Yahoo ends up changing their system in 2019 or something and gives the same player batting and pitching eligibility, then there would be a problem.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 I think the easiest thing might be to just split Ohtani into two assets. Can I promote Ohtani the pitcher and leave Ohtani the hitter in my untouchable 13th spot?

A very good reason why we should not split them into two assets. If Yahoo converges them in a future year, that's a clusterf***.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 They mentioned that scenario in their answer. Yeah, like I said. Lazy. Also, the part about owners not receiving 100% of his stats is also dumb because there's an opportunity cost to having him take up 2 roster spots.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 What Yahoo should have done is change it so all pitcher's hitting stats can count if you put the pitcher in the Util spot
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 What Yahoo should have done is change it so all pitcher's hitting stats can count if you put the pitcher in the Util spot But then you wouldn't get his hitting stats on the day he pitches, so it would tank Ohtani's value and make it totally useless for Bumgarner.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 17, 2017 Posted December 17, 2017 You would have options of bench SP Util SP & Util
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 18, 2017 Author Posted December 18, 2017 I think I'm leaning towards: - If someone owns both Ohtani's, he only counts as one keeper (this is his superpower). - In Yahoo he takes up two roster spots. I don't see an elegant workaround for this. - He can be split in half. - Possibly, thehurl should be allowed to roster the SP Ohtani while keeping the UTIL/OF Ohtani on his farm for 2018.

Fair and along the lines of what I was thinking. Further to that, I'm an idiot, but a fair idiot. I'm going to make a suggestion that if I wish to keep UTIL/OF Ohtani on my farm...it cannot be on my Fernandez Estate spot it has to be a 12 man spot.

Yeah I think your extra farm room is (or will be) expired. At least Maitan is cuttable
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 22, 2017 Author Posted December 22, 2017 Ohtani's 2018 Steamer projections are on his Fangraphs player page FYI
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted December 25, 2017 Posted December 25, 2017 Guys, this time of year really makes me reflect on how grateful I am for this league, and how grateful I am for all of you... being dumb enough to let me draft Vladdy in the 3rd round.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2017 Posted December 29, 2017 Ugh I tried so hard to trade Wade Davis before he signed with some team like the Rockies. RIP his trade value.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 29, 2017 Posted December 29, 2017 Ugh I tried so hard to trade Wade Davis before he signed with some team like the Rockies. RIP his trade value. 2nd round pick?
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2017 Posted December 29, 2017 2nd round pick? Worthless. I can compete for a lower end playoff spot this year if I get any sort of contribution from Robles/Vlad/Gleyber.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2017 Posted December 29, 2017 2nd round pick? Fernando Rodney? He'll put up the same numbers as Davis this year.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 29, 2017 Posted December 29, 2017 Worthless. I can compete for a lower end playoff spot this year if I get any sort of contribution from Robles/Vlad/Gleyber. You'll be better off without Davis' 3.95 ERA. I'll toss in Nick Goody or A.J. Minter.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 29, 2017 Posted December 29, 2017 Fernando Rodney? I will never roster Fernando Rodney in any league.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2017 Posted December 29, 2017 I will never roster Fernando Rodney in any league. But he's a proven closer that knows how to compete and put it all out on the line night after night.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2017 Posted December 29, 2017 But seriously though, for anyone interested. Rodney can be had for dirt cheap, cheaper than dirt, cheaper than a night with BTS. He always somehow gets 30 saves, and will be closing for the Twins. How can anyone hate a Twin.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 29, 2017 Posted December 29, 2017 I want to say Trevor Hildenberger will be closing by June, but Rodney always finds a way to keep his job.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2017 Posted December 29, 2017 Dinger I'll trade you for Davis.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2017 Posted December 29, 2017 You'll be better off without Davis' 3.95 ERA. I'll toss in Nick Goody or A.J. Minter. Savez tho!
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2017 Posted December 29, 2017 Dinger I'll trade you for Davis. Make me a wise offer. Are we still saying that?
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 29, 2017 Posted December 29, 2017 Savez tho! You already have Rivero and Kimbrel. If you want saves, I'll throw in Texas Rangers closer Alex Claudio.
