BTS Community Moderator Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 I only trust catchers who don't catch. Very wise.
BTS Community Moderator Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 Wow, only 7 catchers ranked in the top 400 in DDL value this year.

BTS Community Moderator Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 I keep circling back to Salvador Perez on Dinger's 'available' list, but that 0.285 OBP is just a bit too much for me to stomach.

It was a down year for him in terms of AVG, which completely drives his OBP. He really tanked the last 2 months, before that he was running an .800+ OPS. Yost needs to find a way to keep him fresh down the stretch, it seems to be a recurring problem (1st half .345 wOBA, 2nd half .257). He's still a Top 10ish dynasty catcher. He's still only 26 and has back to back 20 HR seasons. I'm not expecting to get an all-star for him, I also don't mind keeping him and platooning him with Gattis if there isn't interest. Just a chip. If I package him with a dude like Adam Duvall or Felix Hernandez, I think I should be able to get a first division 3B.

A catcher who plays every day, has HR power, and contact skills is always going to be interesting in a 20-teamer. But then he added 7 points to his K%, and it makes me question whether he'll get his OBP back over 0.300, which he has to do to have any kind of value.

Wilson Ramos is probably out for the entire 2017 season, Buster Posey only has an .800 OPS. Maybe time to recalibrate your expectations. Only 7 catchers reached 20 HR so far, although Sanchez probably will as well. Perez is clearly below Posey, Grandal, Lucroy, Sanchez, and Contreras, but after that you could make an argument for him. In a dynasty format I think he's more valuable than Martin, McCann, Wieters, and other dudes in that tier who are similarly flawed but significantly older.

I think he's less valuable than Martin, and clearly more valuable than McCann and Wieters. But that only makes him a fringe keeper for me. How many catchers should even survive the cut this year? The obvious ones: Lucroy Posey Gattis Grandal Contreras Martin Sanchez Ramos (somebody will roster him for the season, and probably regret it) I think we'll see fewer than 15 catchers retained, with close to half the teams in the league picking someone up in the waiver draft.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 I think he's less valuable than Martin I disagree. Where he trails in OBP, he makes up for it in H and SLG. The 7 year age gap is also huge.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 Looking over that list, Posey is untouchable, so are probably Grandal, Lucroy, Contreras and Sanchez. Sal Perez has his warts but he's probably going to be the best catcher on the trade market, unless you think Wilson Ramos is going to recover faster than Marcus Stroman. I don't think most teams would be comfortable entering the season without rostering a catcher, I certainly wouldn't be.
BTS Community Moderator Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 I disagree. Where he trails in OBP, he makes up for it in H and SLG. The 7 year age gap is also huge. Well this year Martin ranked 307 and Perez 483, and I believe Martin has been significantly more valuable each of the last 4 years. Perez's age is nice, but it only counts for so much when he's pretty fringy.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 I forgot Kyle Schwarber existed.
BTS Community Moderator Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 I forgot Kyle Schwarber existed. Yeah, me too. Will he even have C eligibility?
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 Yeah, me too. Will he even have C eligibility? He didn't play any games at C in 2015, so he will probably have to earn it with 5 starts. From 2 days ago: "I want to get back to that point where it's 50-50 on each side now and not 60-40," Schwarber, who is adamant about returning as a catcher and not as a full-time outfielder.

They should probably just trade him to a team that needs a 1B or DH. They don't really need his C innings with Contreras and Montero around, and by all accounts he's not even good anyway. Maybe the bat really explodes if that's all he has to focus on.

Well that will be interesting with Contreras seemingly cementing himself in the position.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 Well that will be interesting with Contreras seemingly cementing himself in the position. Contreras will for sure be the regular starter, but I could see them giving Schwarber the backup duties just to keep both bats in the lineup as much as possible. Montero is cuttable. I agree with BTS that the Cubs should trade him to an AL team, trying to work a guy with a totally reconstructed knee back in as a catcher seems like a disaster waiting to happen, and his range in the OF will be even worse than before. He needs to be a 1B/DH.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 I agree. Schwarber should probably be a 1B or DH. CHC should try to address another need with him instead of trying to shoehorn him into a backup catcher / terrible OF role

z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 What other needs do they even have? hmmmm, I'm just going to say SP because everyone needs more SP
BTS Community Moderator Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 What other needs do they even have? OF maybe? Fowler is fine, and Heyward will play, but their 3rd spot has been a revolving door Szczur/Almora/Contreras/Soler/Coghlan. It's been productive, but they'd probably like to consolidate that into one 3+ win player. I guess a good controllable starter would be nice too. Hammel, Lackey, and Arrieta are all in their last seasons of control in 2017, and probably none of them will be back. But yeah, these are luxuries, not necessities.
BTS Community Moderator Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 Rupp is the man for you! I'm about 85% sure I'm cutting him in BORED.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 Schwarber for Archer would probably be a wise offer for both sides. Edit: NVM. Holy hell, Archer is the best contract in baseball.

BTS Community Moderator Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 Hate to say I told you so... wait no I don't. He was really good for me in the second half. 27/53/12/33 with 317/459 in 205 ABs after I added him.
