I agree that Desmond can't continue being this bad, although his approach is a mess at the moment and he isn't exactly getting BABIPed. In the end I decided to do the deal primarily to get more SBs, as my team has enough power overall to sustain the dropoff from Desmond to Reyes (assuming Desmond bounces back).

 

I'd rather have Sonny Gray too, although I think it's fairly safe to assume he's in for some ERA regression.

I wouldnt be surprised if he continues to be terrible until August and then gets shut down with some injury he's been playing through. Reyes hasnt exactly been carrying my team though so it's a decent risk for me

Desmond was a s***** major leaguer for 2 full seasons before something clicked, and even when he was good, the profile always smelled like a potential quick decline. I wouldn't be shocked if he was just suddenly done.

Yeah, even last year when he went 24/24, he only slashed .255/.313/.430. I don't think he's done -- although it wouldn't shock me -- but I think the potential for me to deeply regret this trade is minimal.

Not just nothing; they actually gave up a prospect and cash with Lackey for the opportunity to pay Allen Craig a lot of money and have Joe Kelly continue to prove he isn't a starter. Pretty amazing trade by the Cardinals. Lackey is going to pile up 3 WAR this year making the minimum.
