NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted October 15, 2013 Posted October 15, 2013 I like how Dinger fared. He got an impact middle infielder and didn't give up any truly elite talent. Each of the guys he traded have some present value and upside, but aren't stars. I'm always a fan of this type of package deal. Desmond is a seven-category contributor at shortstop. Crick isn't nothing either.. he has the high upside you look for in this format.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 15, 2013 Posted October 15, 2013 I'm always a fan of this type of package deal. I generally agree, I usually look to do a 2 or 3-for-1. Asdrubal was downright unplayable for most of the time I owned him, he was an 0-4 machine and really sunk me down the stretch with a ton of bad ABs. I really like Desmond -- perhaps too much -- and I think he can be a 25/25 guy. I really didn't consider the age difference between the two since Desmond is extremely athletic and Asdrubal is soft-bodied; I think it's quite reasonable to assume that Desmond will age better, although I'm primarily concerned with the next 2 years and they're both in their prime. Sammy isn't banking on Asdrubal really, he's just a stop-gap to Lindor (just like in real life). Frankly, I never really believed in Asdrubal. I called him a fluke in 2011 and considered it a career year. I acquired him as a buy-low opportunity and because I was running Scutaro out at SS, but I'm happy to upgrade what was one of my weakest positions. It does hurt to give up Sonny Gray, I can't say a bad thing about him. He surpassed all expectations and I turned a huge profit on his draft position. I think it *may* have been a sell-high opportunity on him, but I also wouldn't be surprised if he becomes a steady SP2/3, I love his FB/hammer combo. The insurance against giving him up was Crick, who has huge K upside. It's funny how opinions can change so quickly -- Crick was a 3rd round pick in the spring MiLB draft and Sonny was passed over altogether and even made it to the 3rd round of our SECOND MiLB draft. I guess I'm in the camp that doesn't really believe Rasmus turned a corner, I think he'll always be streaky and K-prone, although he's a pretty safe bet for 20 HR and you could do a lot worse for a CF. Having Gardner/Bourn/Buxton made him somewhat expendable in my eyes. The other aspect of this trade is that it netted me two more roster spots, so now I can keep Grant Balfour and Huston Street rather than sending them off into the waiver draft. Generally, I find that if opinions are divided on a deal, it's probably a fair one.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted October 15, 2013 Posted October 15, 2013 I'm just not a big fan of Asdrubal or Rasmus in fantasy. Rasmus had a breakout season and still wasn't an impact option: 53th outfielder in standard scoring... that's especially mediocre in a 3OF format. Asdrubal is okay but if you have a good team, you'll be looking to replace him. Gray is the player Dinger may regret losing, as he noted, but he has a good stable of horses remaining and the nature of pitching makes him replaceable. If Dinger really needs a starter mid-season there will ones available and he has plenty of chips left to deal. Sammy will win if Gray turns into a dependable #2 and Rasmus and Asdrubal plateau into solid fantasy regulars. But even then, I think Dinger would be happy with Desmond's production because it's what his team sorely needs.

I am assuming that Lindor will be up for me sometime next season which ironically will take the place of cabrara of the indians. Sonny was the one that i really wanted i think he will get you lots of K's and be a serviceable #2. Rasmus is the reason why it took me so long to pull the trigger on this, hard to see what your going to get for him, hoping he has turn the corner i am still not sure. Crick is a wild card. If he can get control of the walks that he giving up then he could have a pretty high ceiling #2 type guy.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 There's a pretty good chance that Asdrubal will get traded to a more hitter friendly environment to make room for Lindor at some point. If a team like the Yankees picked him up, I could see him turning in a 20+ HR campaign and that would be a nice value boost for you. Sonny is a gem and you have to love anyone who pitches in Oakland.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 Btw Sammy, I sent you an email through Yahoo last week.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 The hot stove is starting to heat up, a little Tuesday afternoon trade for ya. To sammy: Asdrubal, Rasmus, Sonny Gray To me: Ian Desmond, Kyle Crick I like the deal for Dinger. Desmond is the best player in the deal. He's a really good middle infield option and should be for quite a few years. Plus he got a prospect with a high SO rate. Sammy got some lower tier players, but he did fill a hole and he got a sp that can contribute next year. He got some good wildcards that could win him the deal, but he also added to a crowded roster.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 Btw Sammy, I sent you an email through Yahoo last week. Wierd usually comes straight to my phone..... I will double check and get back to you tomorrow. Chance it just got mixed up with other emails.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 Now that gmail has that 3 division inbox, I find that sometimes fantasy stuff ends up in the promotions tab. Not sure if that's the issue or not.
torontofan Verified Member Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 Trade Time! Gryffindor sends: Dustin Pedroia and 45th pick ISO Horny sends: Carlos Martinez, Garrin Cecchini, 15th pick

Gryffindor sends: Dustin Pedroia and 45th pick ISO Horny sends: Carlos Martinez, Garrin Cecchini, 15th pick Wow Martinez and Cecchini are some good gets not to mention are not that far away from contributing on their clubs.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 Great trade, I like it for both sides and their respective needs.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 I think people are underrating just how good Pedroia is, especially in a OBP league and a hits league, where he comes close to 200 every year due to how many AB's he gets. Either way im happy with that I ended up getting after looking for a deal for months now.

Either way im happy with that I ended up getting after looking for a deal for months now. I value Pedroia highly and so really like what Torontofan was able to do here. Martinez and Cecchini are decent prospects, but I doubt either becomes the player Pedroia is. The pick upgrade could be worth quite a bit though... you'll be able to nab a pretty decent prospect at 15.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 I think the problem is that Pedroia is just so dislikable, it depresses his trade value. I think you got a nice package for him.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 Good trade for both sides. I don't think Pedroia is undervalued though. He does have a good bat at a position offense is hard to find, but his HR and SB have each decrease the last 3 years in a row. He's also 30 years old, and the way he plays all out, he might not age all that well.

His last 2 fantasy years were solid but mostly because of his position, make him an OF and he's probably more of an ~80 O-Rank type of player (like an Alex Gordon). Pretty fair deal. Could swing wildly depending on how those prospects develop. Carlos Martinez could get bullpen'd in STL and turn into nothing but a Holds guy, or he could be given a real chance to start and turn into a high K #2 type, or whatever.
torontofan Verified Member Posted October 17, 2013 Posted October 17, 2013 Will be interesting to see how this trade plays out.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 17, 2013 Posted October 17, 2013 Heyyyyyy BTS finally found a taker for the entirely serviceable Torii Hunter... now watch him retire after the Tigers win the World Series.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 17, 2013 Posted October 17, 2013 That's a legitimate fear but it seems to have been factored into the cost. I like the deal. Heyyyyyy BTS finally found a taker for the entirely serviceable Torii Hunter... now watch him retire after the Tigers win the World Series.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted October 17, 2013 Posted October 17, 2013 Good deal for Dinger. Now he just has to hope Hunter doesn't retire. Or go the way like Konerko did this year. Atleast he got a pick back in the deal too.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted October 17, 2013 Posted October 17, 2013 Hunter is underrated (all players whose value lies in R/H/RBI seem to be), but he's also 38. An interesting dynamic and a fair exchange IMO.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 17, 2013 Posted October 17, 2013 Hunter has unsexy vet syndrome. Nothing wrong with an 80/20/80 type with an adequate avg. I shopped around for an OF bat and he was the best value I found.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 17, 2013 Posted October 17, 2013 I'm willing to move Alfonso Soriano if anyone is interested. Likely the cheapest 30 HR bat on the trade market this offseason.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted October 17, 2013 Posted October 17, 2013 If a rebuilding team wants a "free" pick, I'll move pick 111 in the prospect draft to move up several rounds from 96 in the waiver draft. Sent you a PM.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted October 17, 2013 Posted October 17, 2013 We've now made 3 trades and haven't exchanged a single player. Not true! You gave me Tim Collins in the last one. My regretting of that trade somewhat led me to doing this one.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted October 17, 2013 Posted October 17, 2013 Nope - I've never owned Tim Collins. You're right, that was actually with Boxy. I only remember two then: this, and the two-for-one during the MiLB draft. What was your strategy on this trade (if you don't mind me asking)?
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted October 17, 2013 Posted October 17, 2013 I gave you 60 for 78 and 82 before the draft, and then acquired 60 and 92 from you for 62 and 84 during the draft because I wanted Alcantara. Ah that's right. I'll probably be trading down right before the draft again next season.
Fearthedoc Verified Member Posted October 17, 2013 Posted October 17, 2013 Ah that's right. I'll probably be trading down right before the draft again next season. Just out of curiosity, how come you're actively looking to add lower picks? I noticed you already own 8, but you recently posted you still want to add more.
