Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2022 Posted October 13, 2022 I don't think it's lucky. The Leafs starting goalie is really, really bad. He wasn't good for sure. Not impressed by that glove hand. I'm commenting more on the 'Leafs were outplayed' narrative. Leafs made sloppy mistakes, the Habs cashed in, and our goalie didn't really do much to bail them out. That's why they lost.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2022 Posted October 13, 2022 Hopefully Ilya Samsonov can blossom. He was a highly regarded prospect at one point.

He's the one that I'm holding out hope for more so than Murray. That said, neither would've been near the top of my list for who I'd like to see steering the ship in net this season.
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 13, 2022 Posted October 13, 2022 The Leafs goaltending history is hilarious. Seriously, who are the last truly good goalies they have even had? Do you have to go back to the 70s, 60s? Please don't say CuJo or Potvin lmao.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2022 Posted October 13, 2022 On a serious note, CuJo was pretty solid. He almost carried the Leafs to the Stanley Cup in 2002 and they did have deep playoff runs with him at least. Ed Belfour had some great seasons for them (2002-2003 & 2004-2005), though I recall never had much success in the Playoffs those seasons.

I glanced at CuJo's season to season save % and nothing popped but maybe some of those years with Toronto ranked well if league offense was high. But even if he WAS rock solid it would only have been for a 2 year period. I honestly think you have to go allllllllllllllll the way back to a 42 year old Jacques Plante in 1970-71 to find the last Leafs goalie who was truly elite. 51 years and counting. All of the decent ones between then and now have been like top 10 guys at best.

Potvin...although not a perennial All-Star by any means, had a few seasons where he was a legit #1 goalie. He was drafted in 1990. Leafs drafted Rask but Fergie couldn't trade him to Boston fast enough...and they developed Reimer...who, although has had a couple of flashes of good play, has essentially been a journeyman guy. Over 30 years since they've drafted, developed, and reaped some benefits of a #1 goalie. It really is quite remarkable.

Looking to the rivals, since 1970 the Habs have had Dryden, Roy, Price, and even Jose Theodore who at his peak was at least better than any goalie Toronto has found or made in 51+ years. Imagine if the Maple Leafs had a goalie like those guys for 5 to 10 years.

In each of his four seasons with the Leafs, they made the Playoffs and some of those years performed really well in the Playoffs. They ran into some tough New Jersey Devils teams I recall two of those four years. Save percentages in the Playoffs were .907, .932, .927 and .914 over his four seasons. He almost got them to the Stanley Cup in 2001-2002. Lost to Carolina in the Eastern Conference Finals. He's probably been the Leafs best goalie over the last two decades & counting.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 15, 2022 Posted October 15, 2022 Kallgren was called up, so I guess his injury last night wasn't that bad.
