So the Rangers were going to walk away from Buch (who signed for 4 x 5.8) but had room to give Barclay Goodrow and Ryan Reaves a combined 5.3M. Hockey is such a stupid sport. Goodrow's contract is 6 years long!

What the heck am I missing with Buch? Very productive player with an edge

Probably nothing. I think Chris Drury is just not smart.

Kotkaniemi offer sheeted by the Canes. If the Habs don’t match they’ll get a 1st and a 3rd.

It's way better than that. The offer was for 1 year at $6,100,015 (#15 is Kotkaniemi's #), PLUS a $20 signing bonus (#20 is Sebastian Aho's #, who the Habs offer sheeted a couple of years ago). This is an 80 grade spiteful troll job by the Canes. Elite stuff.KK then has to be qualified at $6.1m after next season as hell still be an RFA.Compensation would be a first and third. Pretty sure Montreal will match. Edited by Krylian

I love s*** like this. The Canes just evaporated several millions of Montreal's cap space over the next few years.

Didn't Montreal do this to the Canes a year or 2 ago on someone?

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking of, lol.

This type of front office pettiness is what I want from my sports entertainment. Bring offer sheets to MLB!

I dont match, if im the Habs.

Canes got weaker this offseason, I dont think they're a lock for the playoffs.

And Kotkaniemi isnt even that good.

That's probably the right move, but they're gonna piss off a lot of their fans seeing as they deem KK a "core" piece, and they've essentially traded him for a couple of picks, right after going to the finals. A tough sell to their fans.

I love that they've been put in this position

The Hurricanes played themselves.

Possibly, but not necessarily. They're going to sign KK to a long term deal at a much more reasonable cap hit. They overpaid for one season to force the Habs into a no win position.

Habs ended up giving up more than Carolina did in compensation to trade for an older, worse player in Christian Dvorak to save $1.6m

I don't even know the rules. Can he tear up the contract he signed and negotiate an extension beginning this season, or does he have to wait until the offseason?

Offseason, or extension.

They can start negotiating a new contract extension as of January 1st I believe.

It's not a spin. That's exactly what's going to happen. Long term deal at a more reasonable number is coming. Dvorak is not worth what the Habs gave up to acquire him. If the Leafs gave that up to acquire Dvorak I would not like it.

There's also the not insignificant possibility that he has like 10 points in January, and Carolina isn't comfortable offering him enough money to forego the 6M QO they'd have to give him in the offseason to prevent him from hitting FA. And if he's too good (say, 20-25 points in January), it makes no sense for him to accept less than the QO.

I think these discussions already took place and they have an agreement in principle already.
