Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2020 Posted September 28, 2020 Does the Lightning win the Cup tonight? I'm thinking if they don't, Stars will win out.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 Lightning Win... Hedman the MVP.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2020 Posted October 7, 2020 Leafs drafted a Russian? Have they finally figured their s*** out?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2020 Posted October 7, 2020 Leafs drafted a Russian? Have they finally figured their s*** out? Plenty friendo... wake up!
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2020 Posted October 7, 2020 So should we feel sorry for Matt Murray or impressed with Ottawa making a good deal? I suppose the Trust the Process types will be pissed that they aren't swinging for five straight first overall picks.

I suppose the Trust the Process types will be pissed that they aren't swinging for five straight first overall picks. Why is it a good deal for a team as bad as Ottawa to trade for an RFA who could be a UFA in a year? They've traded for the right to overpay a goalie. Meh. (I don't know anything about the prospect they gave up. I'm assuming the pick isn't worth all that much. Maybe they paid very little, in which case it's fine.)

Gruden is a bottom 6 forward that won't give you much offence I don't think, but will do the dirty work and play aggressive. Problem with Ottawa is that their owner is cheaper than Harold Ballard was. For any other team they lock Murray up for 5 years and they're set for half a decade. No idea what they're going to do though.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2020 Posted October 8, 2020 1. Ottawa could outperform and be a .500 team, sneak in a playoff spot and ride a hot goalie to the finals like what it has done before. 2. A real contender could experience suckage or an injury in the net and overpay at the trade deadline. 3. Murray could provide mentorship or whatever the hell Dorian was talking about to the young goalies. I can see a one year deal being an outcome of this then Murray tries his luck on the market next year.
BTS Community Moderator Posted October 8, 2020 Posted October 8, 2020 I can’t see Ottawa giving Murray a lucrative long-term deal, and I can’t see Murray agreeing to stay in Ottawa long-term for anything short of a lucrative deal, so I suspect he’ll be gone on a year. Not sure why they didn’t just pursue Greiss or Khudobin or whoever to pair with Hogberg. Also, not qualifying Duclair was a Mickey Mouse move by a Mickey Mouse team.

That was more glaring than the unusual trade for Murray. It had me saying "WTF"
BTS Community Moderator Posted October 8, 2020 Posted October 8, 2020 That was more glaring than the unusual trade for Murray. It had me saying "WTF" Team is like 25M under the cap floor and was scared of like a 3.5M potential arb award for a guy who scored 23 goals in 66 games in his age-24 season.
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 8, 2020 Posted October 8, 2020 Also, not qualifying Duclair was a Mickey Mouse move by a Mickey Mouse team. wtffffffff seriously??? 5 (soon to be 6) teams by 25 years old. Duclair must have some off the ice issues.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2020 Posted October 8, 2020 wtffffffff seriously??? 5 (soon to be 6) teams by 25 years old. Duclair must have some off the ice issues. Racist. Would you think that way of a WHITE player?

BTS Community Moderator Posted October 8, 2020 Posted October 8, 2020 Now Ottawa gives up a 5th round pick for known shitbag and pending UFA Eric Gudbranson. Gudbranson is worse than Duclair, and makes about what Duclair was going to make in arb (3M)? Why would they give up a pick for an overpaid player with no upside while letting a skilled player with the same salary walk for nothing? They're going to be straddling the cap floor and Gudbranson has a 3M salary and 4M cap hit. Ottawa is like the Tampa Bay Rays if their front office consisted of Ruben Amaro overseeing a couple of high school interns.
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 10, 2020 Posted October 10, 2020 Matt Murray, Signed: $6.25 million AAV, four years Ottawa has a lot of cap space to burn and Matt Murray has Cup-winning pedigree. He was an elite goalie in his first two seasons, but in the three years since has been anything but, looking closer to replacement level due to two very rough seasons in 2017 and 2019. With his most recent season being his worst, it seems nearly unfathomable that Murray could fetch this kind of AAV. He should bounce back this season toward a more respectable save percentage and there’s always a chance he can regain his prior form – he’s still relatively young – but the cap hit still seems rather outlandish.

I’m pretty sure a team with Ottawa’s cap restrictions should be dumpster diving for goalies. Feels like if Ottawa had a very smart GM their top priority would have been, like, Thomas Greiss.

They took Jake Sanderson a defensive defenseman 5th overall. Everyone knows not to draft defensive defenseman let alone that high. And then they traded up to take his friend Tyler Kleven in the 2nd round. Another s***** defensive defenseman with no puck skills. The Sens are such a laughing stock. I almost feel bad.

I feel kinda bad for anyone who roots for them. I bet they're a masochist.

The whole league is really bad. Yesterdays signings were f***ing terrible. Money being thrown around to bad goaltenders. Some teams paid a lot of money to make their teams worse. Feels like a bunch of Dave Stewarts are running every team.

It was honestly more fun to watch baseball when the fans knew more than a lot of front offices and we could mock them relentlessly. Now when a team does something we don't understand we pretty much just have to assume it's based on data we're not privy to. I think if/when the NHL improves their processes we'll miss the days of the Pierre Dorions of the world fumbling his way through his job.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2020 Posted October 10, 2020 I've been fine with what the Leafs have done, recently. Fanbase is going nuts, though. The Bruins must be in on Pietrangelo after losing Krug.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2020 Posted October 10, 2020 NHL GMs are unbelievably stupid people. I just cannot believe some of these transactions. Stan Bowman traded Saad for nothing. Then traded Panarin for Saad. Then traded Saad for nothing again! It was really just the first time happening again. Deja vue. It means there was code altered in the Matrix... er bubble.
BTS Community Moderator Posted October 10, 2020 Posted October 10, 2020 Lots of skilled players signing cheap 1-year deals. Ottawa instead gives up picks for Gudbranson, Josh Brown, and Austin Watson, none of whom have skill or upside.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2020 Posted October 10, 2020 Devils absolutely traped the Leafs in that trade. GO DEVILS GO!

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2020 Posted October 11, 2020 Devils absolutely traped the Leafs in that trade. GO DEVILS GO! Leafs retained no salary and got a potential useful bottom 6 energy forward. I'm fine with that. Johnsson's spot can be pretty easily replaced.

Arjun Nimmala Vancouver Canadians - A+ SS It's been slow going at the start of the season for Nimmala, but on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with his 3rd home run and 3 RBI. Explore Arjun Nimmala News >
