That's no reason to set the bar that low.

Does it really matter? The only other modern day Senator with their number retired is Alfredsson, and literally no player has any chance of having their number retired by the team in the next two decades. Almost 1200 games with the team as a top-4 d-man, and he's always been huge in the community. Reminds me of the Devils retiring Ken Daneyko's number.

Number retirement is an honour that *should* be reserved for legends.

I have no issue with the Senators honouring their loyal employee in some way but to retire his number is just kind of sad for the franchise.

Yeah, I'd prefer to have a Level of Excellence type of deal for players like Phillips and save number retirements for HoF caliber players, but the sad reality is that with what's gone on in Ottawa (Hossa, Karlsson, Chara, Stone all leaving) there aren't any players with even a Chris Phillips level impact on the team. We're looking at guys like Chabot and Tkachuk in 20 years as the next candidates for number retirement, and that's obviously a big longshot.

I know, I looked at their list of best players quickly and nobody is good enough or stuck around long enough. It’s Spezza and Mike Fisher arguably as the best combinations of good and team longevity

Retiring numbers is stupid anyway. At some point, the Yankees will literally run out of single and double digit numbers.

They will have 25 available numbers and just hand out jerseys like a high school sports team. You get what we have, Clint!

I’m at the Red Wings game, Seguin and Mantha both have had beauty goals. Tied 2-2 in the 2nd.
