He's blaming the low-balling on not negotiating mid-season.

Right, and what JG34's saying, is his agent(Darren Ferris) didn't want to talk during the season, the guy's a goof.

It’s also taxed at like 15% instead of like 50% or whatever his salary is taxed at.

If he is considered as US resident working in Canada then I think it would be taxed at 15% in Canada and then at whatever the US Federal rate is (and then if there is a state rate, that too). But he would get tax credits for the US taxes. So it should be higher than 15%, maybe more like 40%.

I don't really know how the American side of this works. Do players typically make a point of establishing residency in a state with no income tax to avoid state tax on these big bonuses? I know salary tax is determined by the team's travel schedule, but bonuses are based on their state of residence.

Yeah that's the main reason that most athletes have their permanent residence in Florida. Even then they have to do careful tax planning around their travel schedule, they probably don't sign long-term leases or own property where they play, etc.

Of course some just say f*** it and live where they play. Florida isn't the only way to avoid taxes. There are other methods. Matthews could probably live in Toronto full time and roll the bonus into some type of locked in retirement fund or education fund or whatever.

The agent’s reference was to being lowballed in the summer apparently. It’s not like the Leafs just sent him a crappy offer, so the timing of his comments are ridiculous. They proved they’re willing to wait out the agent to get a deal they are comfortable with. I doubt a team is going to pony up four 1st round picks with an offer sheet over 10M AAV.

Also, I agree on the latter.

Love the backpeddling. Wonder if Marner spoke to him and had a "WTF, Dude" moment.

This morning Ferris on the Fan, he didn't say a thing of what was reported, weird. It's all Marner telling him to shut the f*** up.

Sens have sucked the Leafs into playing the same sloppy ******** game they play.

I don't know about that, sloppy play resulted in goals, but...

I'm drunk AF so there's that...

Woohoo... Rielly

It's true Leafs have been run and gun in their own end too much tonight. Simple plays own end, fancy plays other end.
