BTS Community Moderator Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 My Leafs fan friend was telling me that the only way Matthews signs for 5 years was for a cap hit under 10M lol.

Hahah man, he was way off. Meanwhile the Senators have committed 7.5 M until 21-22 for NHL superstar *checks notes uh, NHL forward Bobby Ryan.

Is 4 forwards for 40M a viable way to build a team? Feels like Nylander is gone for prospects/someone on an ELC this summer.

Marleau will be on his last year of 6M too. Kapanen will be an offer sheet target as I doubt Marner would sign one.

Doesn’t Marleau only make like 4M in real money? He’ll be easily moved IMO. Ottawa will probably be interested given that they’re going to have a hard time reaching the floor and his cap hit exceeds his salary.

If they move him and Zaitsev in the offseason that would be nice.
Slot Machine Verified Member Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 Doesn't Marleau have a no-trade? If he retired they could maybe move his contract then, otherwise I think they are stuck with him.

GoldBull Verified Member Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 4.25M salary next year. Plus he's due $3M in signing bonus in July. Paying out $1.25M for a $6.25M cap hit sounds like a pretty attractive piece for a cap floor team.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 Leafs and Matthews agree to a 5 year contract extension! Love it, nice pics at the game yesterday, me jelly!

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 How disgustingly rich are the Leafs that they can pay 95% of this contract in signing bonuses lol.

tafkasg Verified Member Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 I forgot how sensitive you get when people troll the leafs. Naw no salt, go leaves go, but it sucks the Senators are sewering out without a 1st rounder at least right?

I don't see him agreeing to a trade, unless it's to somewhere he really wants to go or it's a serious contender. I don't think Ottawa is either.

Ottawa might might actually be the worst run team in professional sports. It's actually reached the point of hilarity though.

He'd likely want to go back to the SJS' if this were the route Toronto goes.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 Wait, so the cap hit is significantly smaller because of the signing bonuses?
BTS Community Moderator Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 Wait, so the cap hit is significantly smaller because of the signing bonuses? No, the cap hit isn't affected.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 Wait, so the cap hit is significantly smaller because of the signing bonuses? No, I thought that too, when they signed JT, but it's really player protection/insurance if they ever go through a strike or lockout.
BTS Community Moderator Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 No, I thought that too, when they signed JT, but it's really player protection/insurance if they ever go through a strike or lockout. It’s also taxed at like 15% instead of like 50% or whatever his salary is taxed at.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 Marner's agent has come out publicly to state that the Leafs have been lowballing Marner with offers. Sounds like this negotiation could get a tad nasty.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 It’s also taxed at like 15% instead of like 50% or whatever his salary is taxed at. That's a nice perk for players, holy s***.

Sounds like this negotiation could get a tad nasty. I hope that's just posturing, as you say, could get ugly. What a dick his agent is for leaking this now, f***ing goof. “That’s probably the best contract in the National Hockey League,” said Darren Ferris, the agent whose client list includes Maple Leafs star Mitch Marner. “There’s no team-friendly discount there” “So far they’ve been trying to lowball (Marner),” Ferris said. “That’s the reason we’ve come to this point.” “Nobody else is taking a discount. And now you’re asking (Marner) to take one again? It’s nonsense,” Ferris said. “Mitch already did them a favour on the entry-level deal.”
tafkasg Verified Member Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 Hah you win, but once the Leaves don't show up and somehow lose 4-2 later today you'll be sorry. Er.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 Pretty douchey after saying they don’t want to negotiate during the season. He's blaming the low-balling on not negotiating mid-season.
