I made the mistake of going to HFBoards to read the hot takes on this play. So many posts abut how it was a hockey play that maybe warranted a 2-minute minor. Apparently Pettersson isn't strong enough for NHL. What the NHL needs is one of the most talented players in the world staying in Sweden because 176 lbs is too light to prevent him from being checked, then body-slammed WWE-style to the ice back first while he's still off balance from a hit.

I hate HF Boards, but they're not wrong. The hit was fine, the slam to the ice was excessive, but I don't think it's a suspendable offence. 2 minutes for roughing. That's what 2 and 5 minute penalties are there for...for infractions that cross the line but not egregious. Disagree? That's fine. The league might disagree as well seeing as there's a hearing. I guess we'll see. If there isn't then there you have it. Hockey is a very, very physical sport. People are going to get hurt...might as well get rid of boxing or MMA then. If the goal is to turn then NHL into a perpetual All-Star game where no one hits anything and there's no aggression in the sport, then it's not something I'm interested in seeing. Hockey is an aggressive sport. Yes, the slam was over the line, but I guess it's just a matter of how far over the line. To me a penalty for roughing would've been enough...but I will acknowledge that the league is trending towards IIHF type officiating where anything that's very aggressive is strongly frowned upon. Doesn't mean I have to like it.

As you say, the hit was fine. Matheson used his size and strength advantage to separate Pettersson from the puck and remove him from the play. What happened after was not fine: grabbing the shoulders of a player off balance from the hit and shoving him to the ice back first when he's not in a position to protect himself is a dangerous play, and the outcome (concussion) isn't really surprising. There's room for physical contact, but hockey is not a combat sport. Hopefully the NHL chooses to protect its stars. We'll see how the hearing goes today.

Also, Matheson was undressed prior to the play, there was definitely intent to injure with the slam. He'll get a couple games at least, I'm not sure of Matheson's history, I don't believe he's dirty aside from this play, he was obviously embarrassed after picking his jock up off the ice.

Kapanen is so good. Him and Matthews on the same line is deadly.

Certainly has taken over for Nylander nicely.

Sens honoured Ray Emery last night, and his fiance Keisha Chante sang the Anthem's, I saw a clip where she had to start over as she got emotional, that must've been tough.:(

Didn't he assault her multiple times?

Matheson gets 2 games. Glad the NHL ruled that the play was over the line.

Yeah that seems about right. He was obviously taking a liberty out of frustration, long after the puck was gone.

Alleged, they were getting back together or something. She still loved him.

...as with many abusive relationships.

I tend to believe in the 'where there's smoke there's fire' analogy.

Regardless, Emery was not a good dude. There's more than enough evidence of that. And just because he's gone we shouldn't forget that, as many would want you to do.

Whatever... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Multiple goalies complaining that they're getting bruised stopping pucks with the new reduced pads. Great job, NHL.

Ritchie signs, leaving Nylander as the only RFA remaining. Can see the results of Ritchie's hard work this off season, he's dropped a lot of that baby fat.

I know the Kings are having trouble scoring, and their D and Goaltending are usually top notch, but that tending' by Quick has been atrocious, I think they rushed him back for no reason. Campbell wasn't exactly s***ing the bed, lol.

The Kings might be in trouble. Quick relies so heavily on athleticism and that doesn't always age well. Their core is getting old and the next wave doesn't look like it includes any potential franchise talent to replace them - maybe Vilardi but he has back issues.

Also, Quick's injury is re-occuring now.
