Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 "It wouldn't be shocking" if the Reds traded Homer Bailey to create some payroll space, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon opines. Bailey earned $5.3MM last season and will get a healthy raise in his third and final time through the arbitration process this winter. Though Bailey has been one of the Reds' best pitchers over the last two years, he "has shown little interest in signing" a multiyear deal with the team, Sheldon writes, so the Reds could move him now before possibly losing him in free agency after next season." Got this off MLBTR. I wonder if Sanchez + DJ Davis would work for Cincinnati. Bailey is just the guy we need. shut up bro. Sanchez should be untouchable, We have an Ace in just one year from the majors.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 If we could extend Bailey, I'd definitely trade Sanchez and a lot more. Sanchez is great, but what are the chances that he actually becomes an ace... 15%? Bailey is already a durable #2. The trade would be for 2 years of Bailey (Trade-extend is other s***)
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 I know, they're separate. But him being open to an extension would at least be worth something, especially in this market. The two years on their own would still be worth it. My package would have Stroman as centerpiece.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Why would we have a chance at extending Bailey if Cinci doesn't? I feel like Bailey is a NL #2. With his HR rates, he'd likely post an ERA in the low 4s in the AL East.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 I like Stroman a lot. I wouldn't trade him for Bailey and I like Bailey. We need some cost controlled pitching badly with some of the contracts we have.

We need some cost controlled pitching badly with some of the contracts we have. Stroman is decent, not good. He could be a great reliever (RP = s***) or a 5IP starter. choose your poison.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Stroman is decent, not good. He could be a great reliever (RP = s***) or a 5IP starter. choose your poison. We have a differing opinion of him. I guess time will tell who is right. In either case, I don't want to trade him for a year of Bailey. Like I said, we need cost controlled guys with MB, RA, Romero, and Morrow on the books for the next few years.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Because Cincinnati operates on a tight budget? He's probably happy there but just knows they don't have the cash to pay him. We do. Bailey has legit stuff, I think his #2-ness would translate. You have to say that, you own him.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 You have to say that, you own him. Bailey averaged 94.1 on the fastball and commands four pitches. Plus he's been pitching in GABP, a bandbox. This is no NL soft-tosser. Dingers stast Bailey - Park factor Dingers 111 (+11%) 2010 - 9.3 % 2011 - 11.5 % 2012 - 11.5 % 2013 - 10.2 % Blue Jays (Park factor +4)
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 The DH is the bigger factor here.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Another thing, Bailey has a career 1.2 HR/9 at home and 0.85 on the road. He had reverse HR splits this year and had a fantastic season, but you need to consider the park factors for ALL AL East parks vs NL Central, not just the home park. If he didn't play half his games in NL friendly environments, his HR rate would be a lot closer to that 1.2. For the sake of the BALCO Pharm Team, I hope he stays in the NL.

K/IP - NO +50% GB - NO Avoids dingers - NO
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 http://www.fangraphs.com/guts.aspx?type=pf&teamid=0&season=2012 Bailey is an upgrade over all starters we have No doubt about that, but I probably wouldn't give up 6 years of Sanchez for one of Bailey.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 23rd best FIP- among all starters in 2013 (at 87). You'd be hard-pressed to acquire a better pitcher this offseason. And I think there's room for even more growth. No doubt about that, but I probably wouldn't give up 6 years of Sanchez for one of Bailey. Bailey-2 for Sanchez-6 no f***ing way....Stroman for Stroman do it AA.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Bailey-2 for Sanchez-6 no f***ing way....Stroman for Stroman do it AA. a bunch of people keep saying you have Bailey for 2 years. Am I reading something wrong? I think he's a FA after 2014 (ie next year). Is it not Bailey for 1 year?

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Braves players boycotted Chipper Jones' first pitch in NLDS Game 1 Prior to their NLDS Game 1 loss to the Dodgers, the Braves had franchise icon and future Hall of Famer Chipper Jones throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Rather than throw the ball to long-time teammate Brian McCann or team MVP Freddie Freeman, Chipper had to make the toss to the team mascot. Why? Kevin Kernan of the New York Post explains: Evidently, Braves players were not happy Jones had gone on the radio earlier in the day with the team's flagship station, 680 The Fan, and predicted the Dodgers would win the NLDS in four games. So no player volunteered to catch the pitch. First things first: Hey, nice call Chipper. The Dodgers officially won the series in Game 4 on Monday. Secondly: C'mon, really? Are the Braves that petty? I mean, I guess they are since the mascot (the mascot!) had to catch the ceremonial first pitch, but this is silly. Grow up and prove Chipper wrong, that's the appropriate response. Not stamping your feet and refusing to participate. Anyway, Jones clearly wasn't pleased with the turn of events, so he let this fly after the game

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 No doubt about that, but I probably wouldn't give up 6 years of Sanchez for one of Bailey. While I agree about not trading prospects for one year players, I think with Bailey's stuff he would probably translate fairly well to the AL East. I'd be on boat with acquiring him on a reasonable deal + extension. I know it's a bad example, but a lot of people also questioned if Mat Latos would translate from Petco to GABP, guys with good stuff are meant to pitch well in any division, with the obvious consideration of park factors, league and competition but still, I think Bailey would pitch well here in the AL East (sub-4 ERA). He's not an ace, and is a clearly better pitcher than the guys we currently have, but I think in a rotation with a bonafide ace you could still pencil in Bailey as a solid #2/very good #3. Even if you're still concerned with his HR rates, he pitched 200+ innings, K/9 of 8.57 this year and BB/9 of 2.33 (I would compare them to his career #s but fangraphs opens very slowly here, I'm going off the WC GDT).
GD Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2013 Author Posted October 8, 2013 Signing Tanaka and acquiring Bailey is one of the few ways our rotation could realistically be passable next year. Tanaka Bailey Dickey Buehrle Johnson? Morrow? Happ? Youngins
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Signing Tanaka and acquiring Bailey is one of the few ways our rotation could realistically be passable next year. Tanaka Bailey Dickey Buehrle Johnson? Morrow? Happ? Youngins Without including FA/trade additions, I think Buerhle and Dickey are the obvious pencil in guys (barring injury), then if Johnson comes back he probably has another guaranteed spot. I think Morrow has to be given another shot, I don't think you can write him off after one bad year (following a very good one), however it is concerning that it does seem like he is injury prone, and you never want that in your rotation. Depending on Johnson that leaves one trade/FA/IFA (if we do acquire any I don't think AA goes nuts and gets another one, unless we have another TJS mid-offseason); the 5th starter would probably start out as Happ or Redmond, but Stroman and Hutch will likely be knocking on the door early on.

He should shut his mouth and spend more time not trading away everything he can get his hands on. If you think Gibson is soft then fire him. If you're not going to fire the guy for being soft, then why say any of this? What's more, why would you say something so stupid about throwing at players intentionally? Not once, but multiple times? Now every accidental bean-ball is going to get guys run. Shut up and do your job." #Rangers activate RHP Matt West from 60-day DL; designate INF Jeff Baker for assignment.

I think Hutch is going to be knocking on the door during ST I honestly believe he is going to be a #3 type starter for a contending team. Depends on what the team wants to do. Is K numbers are still up and BB are not. I think it is just a matter of him finding his touch like he was just before he got hurt. However you are right. I can see Johnson coming back and Morrow will likely get a automatic spot. Its going to be interesting. I can see AA maybe trying to deal Buerhle but it is hard to say when MB was more or less our best pitcher last season.
