Trade proposal from The Athletic...thoughts?
Toronto Blue Jays and Cincinnati Reds
Blue Jays acquire: RHP Luis Castillo, RHP Jared Solomon
Reds acquire: SS Jordan Groshans, RHP Alek Manoah
The Blue Jays had a terrific offseason. They signed outfielder George Springer, brought back left-handed starter Robbie Ray, traded for southpaw Steven Matz and landed closer Kirby Yates in free agency. However, one vital area wasn’t addressed: acquiring a No. 2 starter behind left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu in their rotation. This trade would solve that. Luis Castillo, 28, is in his prime and has been really consistent over the last couple of seasons. In 2019, he went 15-8 with a 3.40 ERA and 3.70 FIP. Last year, he posted a 3.21 ERA and a 2.65 FIP in 12 starts and averaged 11.4 strikeouts per nine innings.
Most evaluators think Castillo has even more upside if he can harness his breaking ball and improve his fastball command. But to acquire him, the Blue Jays would have to take a huge hit in their farm system. However, they could rationalize giving up top shortstop prospect Jordan Groshans because they have Bo Bichette entrenched at the position in the majors, and although it would be tough to part with right-hander Alek Manoah, it would be worth the gamble because Castillo is a proven commodity and the Blue Jays are ready to make a World Series push. Since the Blue Jays would be giving up two elite prospects, they’d probably insist on receiving a second player in the deal. Right-hander Jared Solomon would make sense considering he’s a mid-level prospect, but he should make it to the majors as a middle reliever in time.
The Reds’ financial situation is dire. They must prioritize moving proven commodities for top prospects if they want to balance their financial books over the next few seasons. They’ve had so much trouble trying to solve their shortstop position that they even moved Eugenio Suárez there this week to see if it would work. Groshans, 22, would serve as a long-term solution at shortstop, and allow top prospects Jose Garcia and Jonathan India to eventually compete for the second-base job. Manoah, 23, was the Blue Jays’ first-round pick in the 2019 MLB Draft (No. 11 overall). He has a huge arm with a fastball that registers in the upper 90s and a nasty hard slider. His change-up needs more development, but overall, the stuff plays.
Bottom line: This would be an impactful trade for both teams. The Blue Jays get the starter who could put them over the top and Reds get significant prospects for the long haul.
