They need pitching. That might not work well for us though.
He is above average in every metric, controllable for 3 more years and has quietly put up 11.5 WAR in 3 seasons.
I should have been more clear. I meant sign him to the minor league deal and make him earn his way. I would try and move Smoak regardless. If he sees regular playing time at 1B, we are not playoff contenders.
He has a noodle arm but Saunders and Bautista do also. I agree with number two just not sure what else to do. If we somehow resign Jose, maybe he leads off with Pillar 8th, Revere 9th.
I might get flamed for this but Fowler has signed elsewhere and our options in the OF are dwindling. I feel the FO shouldnt give up any quality prospects and they should leave our starting rotation alone. We have around $25mill left to spend. Ben Revere had a down year but is only 28 years old. I think signing him for cheap as 1 OF piece and making him earn his spot on the roster might be worthwhile.
He provides better def, speed and arm than either Saunders or Bautista did this past season. If he can leadoff and get on at a .330 clip he could provide great value.
Signing Bautista at the right price/term and having him split time in RF/1B/DH would leave money left over for pen arms and a backup catcher.
At this point I would try and move Smoak for anything.
You trade Pillars defence for Inciartes offense. Pillar is a top OF defender while Inciarte doesnt provide top OF offense.
Also its highly likely that our corner outfielders are all going to be negative defenders so trading Pillar makes no sense.
Last season was an outlier for him, he had 17hr away and 12 at Coors iirc. 144 WRC+ away, 116 at Coors.
2015: 111 Home, 89 away
2014: 122 Home, 71 away.
I hope we dont get him. Giving up a solid young pitcher for primarily a guy that had one good year. Id rather keep the rotation and sign someone for the OF at this point.
If our FO predicted it, so would other FO and his agent. What happens if you stall on Morales, he signs elsewhere and so does Edwin?
I dont think anyone could have envisioned that EE would be having issues getting an offer in the 4/80 range.
It doesnt matter. If they could have predicted the market shift, how does that change the offer to him? We wouldnt offer more and if we offered less he wouldnt have signed. You cant wait around, the decisions the FO make today have effects for several years.
I have no issue with how the FO handled it. They gave him the offer and a timeline, him and his agent took a risk that he would get a better offer elsewhere and that he would take the offer or use it to leverage more money from the Blue Jays. The FO had a plan in place and needed to execute it so they went out and signed Morales for half and less term.
Signing Edwin doesnt make alot of sense though. That would require Morales to play 1st base on a semi regular basis and Pearce in the OF on the regular.
It is kind of odd. A few weeks back most of us scoffed at the jays offer of 4/80. We thought it was fair but nowhere near good enough to match a few other teams.
Edwin would never sign a 1/20 at this point and he shouldnt either.
His agent goofed up, screwed his client and us Blue Jay fans over. We would have EE and Pearce instead of Morales and Pearce and still likely going after Fowler too.
Pipe dream but If we could sign Jose and Fowler at the right price that would be good too.
