  1. I think there's a very good chance that Fisher is better than both of Swanson and Burr.
  2. Swanson feels like a Tommy John surgery candidate waiting to happen after the repeated forearm/elbow issues.
  3. There were definitely some very solid chances to score with runners on third and less than 2 outs that were squandered. If the team managed to plate even one of these it could have easily led to a victory.
  4. That could essentially be like setting a bunch of money on fire if he doesn't successfully return to his previous form.
  5. That's possible, but Varsho is up to about 40 throws now, and it feels a little unlikely that he's intentionally lobbed every one of those back with minimum effort vs simply having less arm strength to start with. Perhaps he's trying to save the shoulder a bit by pulling back on the throwing effort or something of that sort.
  6. The crazy second half run felt like a bit of a fluke but they've fully earned every bit of their success this season. It's at least semi encouraging that the Jays have stacked up very closely against them in the first few games of this series.
  7. Another positive development was Ryan Jennings striking out the side in his AAA debut. Throwing strikes looks to be a bit of an issue based on the walk rate but he gives the team a chance to actually feature two home grown relievers out of the pen for what is likely the first time in this front office's entire tenure.
  8. The Tigers have amassed an impressive collection of young talent, including a stable of high octane arms out of the rotation.
  9. He had a 10 game stretch in late April/early May where he appeared to be hitting his stride. In this sample over about a week and a half or so he hit 3 home runs and produced a 122 wRC+. He hasn't been able to replicate this type of production in the small sample of games since he tweaked his shoulder.
  10. If I recall correctly pitchers who undergo rotator cuff surgeries tend to lose velocity as a result, so it's not surprising that Varsho is experiencing a large dropoff. I looked up a study and the degree of recovery largely depends on the severity of the tear. The study suggested that in pitchers they eventually improved over a course of 3 years, but none of them fully returned to prior levels of performance. How this corresponds to a position player with far less demand on the shoulder is a separate topic however.
  11. Something that was brought up in last night's broadcast was Varsho's reduced throwing speed from the outfield. This was something I had been tracking coming off of his shoulder surgery. He hasn't made enough throws from the outfield yet to qualify for a Statcast average, but the available data is pretty alarming. His maximum throw speed so far is only 74.3 MPH up to this point compared to previous maxes in the 92-93 MPH range, whereas his typical average velocity was around 84 MPH in recent seasons. For comparison the worst average throwing speed produced from the outfield this season is the 79.9 MPH from Kyle Isbel. It's entirely possible that Varsho now has the weakest outfield arm in the sport. Thankfully he's appeared to hit another level in terms of outfield jumps, but the arm will likely lead to opposition baserunners eventually taking a pile of extra bases.
  12. Santander was hitting much better for a few weeks preceding the shoulder injury. Hopefully he can rediscover this form at the plate in relatively short order.
  13. Santander is kinda like a switch hitting version of Joe Carter. You can reasonably expect 30'ish home runs, 90-100 RBI's, below average but passable corner outfield defense, low OBP's etc.
  14. Lukes is a very solid ballplayer on both sides of the ball. Ideally the team would have a right handed platoon mate to partner him with as hasn't had any success in a very small sample against left handed pitching.
  15. Kloffenstein and Macko have both made rehab starts in the low minors so hopefully they can be depth starter options in the not too distant future as well.
  16. I recall this started being mentioned a few weeks ago that MLB was looking to shrink the shadow zone to promote higher umpire accuracy. MLB claimed that they sent out memos to all of the team's general managers and to the players association, but there doesn't seem to be any executives or players who knew about this change when asked about it.
  17. I can only assume they don't want him to play in a situation where a night game is immediately followed by a day game. Perhaps he'll still be available later in the game as a pinch hitter/defensive replacement if the situation warrants it.
  18. I had a look at the Statcast box score and Swanson got BABIP'd in that game. None of the hits were hard hit, and he gave up an average exit velocity of only 70 MPH. Burr was hit much harder by comparison as he allowed an average exit velocity of 97.5 MPH among 3 hard hit balls.
  19. Protection is kind of a ******** premise anyway.
  20. It's hard to say whether the shoulder was a long term concern for Daulton. I do recall it was mentioned he initially hurt it diving for a ball in the field, and it was further aggravated when he collided with Pete Alonso when on the basepath. I suspect the increased swing speeds could be a case of Daulton strengthening his overall shoulder and supporting muscles as part of the post surgery rehabilitation, and retraining his swing afterwards may have unlocked a bit of new athleticism as well. Hopefully he maintains the swing speed gains moving forward.
  21. In a perfect world Altuve felt like this guy's unrealistic best case scenario outcome. He's certainly an interesting prospect, as he's clubbed 10 home runs in his last 160 PA in high A Vancouver since his arrival there in August last year. If he can ever find a way to stay on the field more consistently he offers a lot of potential upside with the bat.
  22. I was a little concerned about how the shoulder surgery was going to effect Varsho at the plate, but he's come back swinging the bat harder than ever as a Blue Jay at 75.7 MPH average up to this point of the season.
  23. I was amazed that there wasn't more heated competition for his services when he reached free agency. I don't know how long he's going to be able to keep up this type of production but he's continued to get better at the plate in his 30's.
  24. I think Barger has both of those guys beat in terms of raw velocity. We'll get a more complete picture once Barger has enough throws to qualify. Rolen had the best throwing accuracy of any player I've ever watched, it was amazing how he could dive to snag a screaming liner, hop to his feet and fire a strike to first base every single time.
  25. He also fired off rockets with his arm as well. He easily has the strongest infield arm I can recall seeing with the Blue Jays.
