    I'd have him taking a ton of reps at third base to see if he can passably handle the position when Chapman isn't available. Given what we've seen from Espinal defensively this season and Biggio in past seasons at third base he can't be much worse than those two.

    This has to be one of the more frustrating losses this season. It started early on with Kikuchi getting f***ed over by the umpire on a clear strike three that immediately led to a Ramirez home run. Then there were a ton of wasted gift wrapped scoring opportunities throughout the game. There was the baffling decision to pinch run for Schneider when the team was already down two regulars in Bo and Chapman, and the awful decision making in the 9th where Biggio was called upon to bunt with the first baseman breathing down his neck instead of taking the 3 chances the team had to pick up the winning run on a base hit, and Espinal being allowed to swing on a 3-0 count. Finally Jackson continued losing his shine when he was bombed to end the game. This team is f***ed, when the offense finally starts coming to life the pitching staff coughs up a million runs. Now the injuries are seemingly starting to pile up to key regulars in a key stretch of the season.

    I believe the gameplan was to pitch him on back to back days to see how he reacts before calling him up. Hopefully after getting into a game today he'll be good to go.

    I'm a bit nervous about the generic thoracic spine inflammation diagnosis. I'd like to know what the root cause of this is as it could potentially be something fairly serious.

    Hopefully Ryu'a newfound commitment to fitness rubs off on Manoah as he made a very impressive physical transformation during his rehabilitation time

    Varsho has a career .715 OPS, and in his 1.5 seasons in Arizona as a full time regular he posted OPS values of .755 and .745. It's entirely possible he returns to that level of production moving forward, he's had one really awful month this season that's really tanked his overall numbers.

    Just finished watching. Absolutely tremendous job by Garcia getting out of the mess the infield defense created. I think Buck misread his inherited/stranded runner stats on the air a bit but after today's game he's stranded a tremendous 22 out of 25 total inherited runners. He's been really damn good for nearly half the season with a sub 2 ERA/sub 3 FIP and he'll need to move up the pecking order a bit with Swanson's apparent injury. Davis Schneider really deserves more rope to stay in the lineup, he's been a massive difference maker when his name has been penciled into the starting lineup. I'd like to see what he can do with an extended run of starts without yanking him out of the lineup the first time he has a rough game. Ryu has been awesome since coming back from injury. I didn't envision him being this good so soon after Tommy John surgery, it's too bad his defense let him down so badly or he could have stayed in the game quite a bit longer.

    I suspect Chapman is gone due to likely exorbitant free agent contract cost, and Kiermaier doesn't make a lot of sense to retain due to Varsho's most valuable position also being center field, but I can see potential returns for both Merrifield and Belt as each of them should be relatively affordable on shorter term deals.

    That would be interesting to try to navigate getting him warmed up if he's in the lineup that day. If he were on base during his teams at bat he wouldn't be able to get himself warmed up in the bullpen so he'd maybe need to be replaced in the lineup when he's getting ready to pitch.

    I don't think playing outfield is going to be an option for Ohtani until the elbow is fully healthy, and at that point he's likely almost ready to pitch anyway. It seems like the thoughts of him ever playing outfield as well as pitching just went up in smoke due to the extra wear and tear this would place on his surgically repaired elbow ligament.

    Gausman's thrown up quite a few dud starts recently so hopefully he brings his A game tonight.

    This contract is anything but a straightforward option style of contract. I don't think I've seen anything like it previously. If Green comes back and dominates I think there's a very good chance the initial option is picked up and Green is a Blue Jay for 3 more seasons at what basically amounts to market rate for a good reliever.

    Was that Heineman's fault?     I don't think the team would have negotiated those options if they had no intention of picking them up. If Green ends the season healthy he'll opt out for certain given how expensive premium relievers have become in free agency.

    The team doesn't use Swanson in early innings so he's out as an option. That basically leaves Richards, Garcia and Cabrera as remaining options. Cabrera is used more specifically for matchups against lefty batters so that leaves Richards and Garcia. Runners on base: Garcia 9.24 k/9 2.13 BB/9 .389 BABIP 4.33 K/BB LOB 45.5% 3.19 FIP Richards 12.43 k/9 5.14 BB/9 BABIP .279 LOB 61% 2.98 FIP Richards get a slight nod here with more strikeouts and more runners left on base. Neither guy really stands out dramatically over the other based on having runners on base, but it's a far different situation when there are runners in scoring position. Runners in scoring position: Garcia: 9.42K/9 3.14BB/9 3.00K/BB 1.33 BABIP .333 LOB 10.2% 3.55 FIP Richards: 14.00K/9 9.00 BB/9 1.56 K/BB BABIP .250 LOB 35.7% 3.49FIP Richards get the nod here again with the great strikeout rate and much better strand rate. He seems a little more likely to compound the issues due to the high walk rate but FIP values are essentially the same.

    I can agree that Garcia might be down the pecking order in the pen a bit after all of the additions this season but that doesn't take away from the fact that he's still a damn good reliever. Having a guy like this available in middle relief is a really strong asset. For the season as a whole Garcia is striking out 10.10 per nine innings. He is definitely striking out fewer batters recently though with only 6.75 k/9 in August.

    It's fair to question the advanced analytics department with respect to offensive output but at the same time they deserve a lot of credit towards how good the team has been on the run prevention side of things.

    Yimi takes far too much heat on this forum. Since he stopped tipping his pitches towards the end of May he's been one of the team's best relievers with 1.93 ERA/2.84 FIP/0.7 FWAR over 28 innings. I really don't get the amount of grousing that occurs over a dude that's pitched like a 1.5 WAR reliever over nearly half a season of games, there's non-stop bitching every time he enters a game.

    He's been pretty good recently after a mostly poor season. 4 of his last 5 starts have been very good which is encouraging for the guy given the stuff that he possesses.

    He should spend more time in batting practice with Biggio to learn how to barrel baseballs.
