That span in the late 90s, no goalie has ever been better. Included in that was the '98 Nagano Olympics, best on best competition and Hasek basically won the gold single handedly. Six games isn't a huge sample but a 0.97 and .967 is just ridiculous on that stage, no one had a stronger argument for best player on earth at that time.

I don't think a goalie has had a superior peak. He was a top 3 player (not just goalie) in the sport for a span stretching several years, I don't think another goalie has really done that. There are guys like Roy, Brodeur etc who accumulated enough personal and team accolades to make a conversation for best career, but they were never making an argument for best hockey player on planet earth.
  3. When I saw this thread was bumped, I assumed we were talking about the massive match for Canada this evening.

  6. JD Davis to the A's on a one year deal for $2.5M, plus $1M in potential performance bonuses. Maybe he'll save some money and hassle by not having to move. Edit - Davis also gets 1.1M in termination pay from the Giants, so he's guaranteed 3.6M and can make up to 4.6M. Which means he'll lose between 2.3M-3.3M after the Giants cut ties
  7. I was sort of hoping we would claim Canaan Smith-Njigba when he was on waivers (twice) but unsure if he ever got to us on the waiver priority, having been claimed both times. Solid minor league numbers and an intriguing power/speed/plate discipline profile, plus an option remaining. If another dude along those lines gets waived off a 40 man in the coming days, hopefully we jump on it.
  8. The two pitchers Seattle acquired for Kelenic both will have TJS

  10. I wonder if Bauer has tried that
  11. Saw a video awhile back about a modernized version of cricket that was getting a push. They were recruiting a lot of college baseball guys etc, obviously a similar skillset
  12. There's been a lot of talk that they'll trade Harold Ramirez, who is one of their bigger salaries and ate up the majority of appearances from the DH slot last year. Hasn't happened yet obviously but moving him would surely free up ABs for Rosario

I'm surprised that the Avs didn't go and get some sort of veteran backup or 1B guy. I guess they have faith in young Annunen who has played well, but in just six games. It seems like they are leaning on Georgiev too heavily this year (most appearances at 52 and tied with Saros for most starts) and he's not playing overly well. On a team as strong as the Avs, one would expect their starter to be well above fighting for a .900 SV %. May just not be quite cut out to be playing that often, thought maybe they'd do something to take some of the load off his shoulders.
  14. Might be a fluid situation right up until the trade deadline and/or beyond..

Really wasn't any rumor of him moving at the deadline, that's an off season move if anything. Verbeek was pretty candid on the topic. He said look around the league at all these good teams who can never figure out their goaltending. When you have someone who has proven to be a workhorse, should be in no hurry to give them up. Plus the Ducks used up their retention slots in the Lyubushkin and Edmonton (Henrique/Carrick) deals, just likely weren't any teams able to take on Gibson's full 6.4M right now. Could see it finally going down by the draft though, if Dostal finishes strong. Give him more of the reigns and pair him with a cheaper 1B guy.

They've sold too much to now say they want to contend, makes no sense.
