  1. That makes a lot more sense! Thought he was replying to the comment directly above asking for who'd have the assets to acquire JD.
  2. Yeah, no matter what they try to do it's tough - how much is offered in an extension before it becomes a restriction on what we can do with the remaining budget?
  3. If we reran this season with exactly the same players, but Travis, Donaldson and Sanchez had no injuries, we'd make the playoffs easily. That doesn't mean that'll happen next year, but it's an exaggeration to write us off even before Vlad and Bo potentially get here in 2019.
  4. The Rays? You're joking right? No way they acquire an ageing star to extend him on a high salary. We can probably rule out the Red Sox, too now that Devers has started his MLB career well.
  5. Agree with you that he needs the playing time, but I don't think he'll get a September call up. I suspect the injury has put him at least 6 months behind schedule on ETA for the majors. I think they're more likely to use September to ease Travis back from injury.
  6. I doubt they would have bothered sending him to the AFL if they intended to get him playing time on the big league club.
  7. Work out what to do with JD (he has just as big an impact on this as the FO - he may not want to sign an extension). Trade one of Morales, Pearce or Smoak. Promote Teoscar, Alford, and Gurriel. Trade Pompey while he still has a little bit of value. Sign one good free agent starter (Alex Cobb? Cheap buy low candidate). Hope that Travis, Sanchez and Donaldson (if he's still here) are fully fit.
  8. Likely means we won't see Gurriel as a September call up. Hopefully he'll win a 25 man spot in spring training though.
  9. If Tulo had never been traded he could have had a good chance to make it.
  10. Good move, creates space for Teoscar and/or Alford to get some playing time in September. We were never going to go to arbitration with Aoki.
  11. Yeah he's the kind of player who can make it in at the 8th or 9th time of trying when there's a weak year. Probably not quite enough on stats alone, but the "story" helps him.
  12. There's also a few borderline players that might get in with a bit of luck - David Price, Chase Utley, Zack Greinke etc
  13. Good to see you moved Ichiro - he's a first ballot no question. I'd add Longoria to your need a few more seasons category. Although he's no longer a current player - does A-Rod get in? I think he does eventually (obv on talent alone he should).
  14. If they remember the overall experience as a good one they'll want to come back. Then eventually they go for the actual sport - that's the theory anyway.
  15. Bollocks - why do macdonalds do happy meals? Why do so many sports teams do fan giveaways / promotions? Kids like shiny fun stuff.
  16. Every time JD does that you want him to be here for years..... this offseason and how they handle his contract situation is so pivotal for the near and mid future. It's a tough choice no matter which route they take.
  17. 81 home games and 162 games in total are super hard to market if the team isn't in a playoff race. Promotions, events etc are what's needed to get as many kids interested as possible. They are the next generation of fans and potential players. Forget respecting the game, at the end of the day sport is for most fans an entertainment, that has to compete with Internet, video games, tv, other sports etc.
  18. I wasn't sure that I would, but I like the two tone blue uniforms the Jays are wearing.
  19. Yes it counts as service time.
  20. Only because he plays for the Rays - I think most baseball fans would recognise him as the best Rays player ever and a potential hall of fame candidate.
  21. I don't think any of those three things will happen!
  22. He's not leaving Fox - but they recently moved to video only so he no longer had a platform for his articles (he's been putting them on Facebook). Now he does, though the Athletic is behind a paywall. He'll still do video for both Fox and MLB.com.
  23. Yeah Thomas is an UFA at the end of the season (as is LeBron if he declines his player option). If LeBron leaves, then they don't resign Thomas and have a ton of cap room plus a likely top 5 pick from the Nets to rebuild. If he stays that pick could be traded for a Thomas replacement - Thomas will be 29, and because of his height is even more of a defensive liability than Irving. Someone is going to regret giving him a free agent contract.
  24. Until the rule changes last year Otani would have been exempt from international signing bonus restrictions at the end of this season (at least 23 with 5 years service in a professional league). He is also a potential superstar who would be an even bigger media draw than either Dice-K or Yu Darvish were. So don't be surprised if the MLB allows some sort of exemption for him if he wants to come over - he's just the kind of exciting player that MLB want.
